So I got a set of Koni Sport shocks to replace the very bouncy worn-out stock shocks that were on the car.
They definitely feel a lot better when I'm driving...however I just noticed that I now have a small protrusion in the lower part of my NACA duct It appears to line up with the shock top, where I notice there is a part that sticks up higher than the stock shocks. I need to take some pics but haven't got around to it.
Has anyone else noticed this? Oddly, I don't hear or feel any rubbing, and closing the hood seems normal. I need to check if it's still touching or if somehow the hood was closed before the shocks were seated, if that makes any sense...
(Note: I didn't do the install, a shop I sometimes use did it) _________________ -----------------------------------------

Koni top adjustable shocks?? The metal dial will stick up further than stock an there’s very little room between shock tower and the underside of the naca _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Yup, Koni's and Turbo's don't go together. Your shop created the ding the first time closed the hood. |

I had to trim down my gaz dampers, they put a little ding in the naca duct after a while. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Ugh...is this widely known? I thought these were a recommended upgrade
Is there any reason I can't cut that piece that sticks up from the top of the adjuster (not familiar with the GAZ but it sounds like maybe a similar problem). _________________ -----------------------------------------

I have stock top mounts, which gives it more space to move. And i think it can work on some cars and some not, its just some mm we are talking about, which most likely can differ between cars due to all the tolerances involved, bonnet fitting etc _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Maybe we should just consider it a badge of honor. "See that ding? That's 'cause it's got a Custom Suspension!"

WTF
This has got me thinking now because I have a ding in my duct but I don't think I have konis.. I thought my shocks were original..
This is also the first I have ever heard of this and I have read a LOT of threads here..
If Koni shocks are known to damage turbo cars this should really be more common information..
Can you guys post pics of your duct dings so I can compare them to mine?
I'll post a pic of mine too here in a minute.. (heads out into the tundra under winter storm warning to take pic of duct dent)
Is it there?
My shocks just have an allen socket in the end of them.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Use modelling clay/plasticine etc on your strut top, close the bonnet to see how close they are from hitting. A small adjustment in the bonnet hinges and alignment makes a difference in hitting or not.
Some strut tops could be cut/milled down. Top adjustable Koni's need the nipple for the screw adjusters to turn the inner rebound adjustment. Just don't leave the screw adjuster on the shock and shut the bonnet!!!!!!
I dented the middle of my bonnet due to the non standard location of the throttle body hitting the bonnet when I hit the sump on a kerb!!! Whole engine was lifted 5-10mm which was enough to make contact and crack the paint on the top side. Very annoyed and had to repaint the whole bonnet _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Crazy, you learn something new every day. In 17 years of these cars I had no idea those dings were caused by Konis. What fortuitous timing as well because I just installed a new set on Sabine but have not put the hood on yet so she was spared the ding. Normally I'm a Bilstein guy but I got these Konis in a parts lot so figured I would just use them....silly Konis.
