Since I have now re-opened the door to the world of 924 Turbos…I have 4 if you are not tracking.

I will restore the 1982 924 Turbo first once I get the updated title…then flow the work down to each of the others as I can.

What are the Unobtainium items for ours cars? I know a few folks in the car community here in my area and i know certain things can be recreated.

I know the New Old Stock items are probably drying up.

It appears many of the typical consumables are still available…e.g. hoses, belts, brakes,….

I guess what is not..interior items for sure…what else have you all found to be no longer Available.

Appreciate your time and responses.

Jim

It seems most engine internals are NLA. Rod bearings are the only typical bottom end rebuild part I can think of that's readily available; Pelican lists a standard size, King lists one undersize, but I can't say for sure it's still available. Pistons, piston rings, main bearings, oil pumps - all long out of production items you'd have to scrounge for. There's lots of stuff NLA for the fuel injection, but at least the major components (fuel pumps, filters, fuel distributor, warm-up regulator, injectors) are available or can be rebuilt. Lots of little things, like the cold start valve, frequency valve and fuel pump relay are also long gone. Even air filters are a problem: I was able to get a Porsche branded one that appeared to have been on a shelf quite a while. Rock Auto lists a Mahle replacement, but it's been out of stock for over a year.

At least most safety and consumable items are available. My hydraulics (brakes and clutch) all had major issues, and I was able to replace the master cylinders, rebuild the calipers and replace the wheel cylinders (albeit with Centrix China bits), as well as replacing all the brake flex lines. Belts and most hoses are still available (at least one heater hose for the 931 appears to be NLA though). I don't know that anyone makes a replacement radiator; mine was half-plugged, but otherwise sound, and I was able to have it rodded out and rebuilt. Fortunately, a lot of what you can't buy new can often be found on ebay, plus a couple great members here have helped me out with some things.

It's a pain on some things, but it could be a lot worse. The array of VW parts Porsche used helps in both cost and availability. Anything truly unique to the car (especially the 931) is likely to be a bear though. A lot of gearbox parts are easy to find, but as I understand it, 1st and 2nd gear are unique to the G31 (which is basically a 915 gearbox), long out of production, and things mine probably needs... One place that often has stuff you won't find anywhere, but that you might have to adjust your expectations for, is Einmalig. https://einmaligparts.3dcartstores.com/ I've ordered a few things from them (the air filter came from them) that I couldn't find anywhere, but my experience was their communications and timeliness can be lacking. My sense, in my limited time, managing to get a borderline basket case 931 driveable again, is you can find everything you need, but before you tear into almost anything, you want to see what's available for parts.

Anyway, I'm not remotely the expert here, but I hope this helps. It's a car I couldn't recommend to a beginner, or someone on a really limited budget. Still, it's not bad for the level of car it is - not exactly a 911 on Honda prices, but however you slice it, it's a lot more than a comparable Chevy/Honda sports car of the era for a lot less than 911 cost. And it seems you can fix anything that could go wrong, although in many cases it's a perfect example of a sign I remember seeing in a mechanic's shop when I was a kid: it said "You get to pick two: you can have it done quickly, you can have it done cheaply, or you can have it done properly."

Most of the parts are actually available, like bearings, pistons etc (probably cheaper to do a custom order though). Some parts like some of the hoses etc have a bit of a non consistent availability. Parts like flywheel, turbine housings, exhaust manifold, DITC ignition box etc have to be sourced second hand, sometimes that will take time to find in decent condition. The US have some specific emission stuff aswell, which might need some extra work.

The difficult thing used to be the crank sensor, but that got sorted by our french hero

More serious difficulties are with G31 gearbox parts, CMS used to make parts a couple of years ago when i redid mine, but i think they dont anymore, some bearings in the box were NLA aswell. And there seems to be a lack of fuel pump relays nowdays. I dont get the air filter thing, they seem to still be available at all the usual places, at least around here.

Interiors parts in good condition can also be hard to find, new dash and fabrics can be bought but it will cost alot of money to make a bad interior nice again.

If you start out with a very incomplete car it can be a bit of a hassle, some parts takes time to find. If its all complete then its much easier to do progress.

As previous mentioned, dont expect prices on parts to be at n/a levels, its quite a bit more expensive in general.

Looking forward to this...
Recently purchased an 82 931 that is being delivered this week. Who knows what I bought! HA

Piston sets are available from Porsche. In fact many parts are available through the dealers like con rod bolts etc. Yes, some items are long time NLA but things can come back into stock as much as being 'sold out'. Always worth checking in to Porsche first.

A lot of people quote specialists like Rosepassion in France. They, like most specialist stores buy parts from Porsche. Some prices are higher than Porsche.

Then there's outfits like Mittelmotor etc. who seem to have things like pistons, bearings etc. available through aftermarket suppliers to support their own and customer cars.

Finally, there's an array of active forums like this plus FB where some people can and willing to help out others in need. Post up what you need and someone might just have that item on the shelf gathering dust.

really appreciate the replies. i have been off board trying to figure out a few other projects.

I recently purchased a large number of spares from the young man that sold me the 1982. I apparently bought not just his spars but his 1980 931 shell as well so i now have 5 931's...lol

in inventorying these 5 cars i noticed that, as mentioned by some of you there are a good amount of engine and consumable parts, what I have a found that many of the interior trim items are well in really bad shape. curious if it would be worth trying to recreate some of these at scale. The rear quarter wind trim pieces (pressed fiberboard) would not be too difficult to make out of fiberglass or carbon weave and then have a local shop use them to create new panel covers. i will have to do this for a couple of the cars I have...not sure if it would be worth the effort to offer for sale. I am still doing my own research as I would like my hobby to maybe be helpful to others. Maybe just a pipe dream. more to come.
