hey all - any quick thoughts on a hard to start 924?

- not a daily driver, start ~once a week
- replaced the fuel accumulator a few years ago (prob 4) as recommended by mech, ran well for years after
- runs fine once started, seems to have a hard time regulating itself when outside temp is cooler (maybe normal?) during warm up, sometimes have to restart once it "clicks"
- runs great once warmed up for a couple of minutes, no misfires or starving issues

- cold start valve? WUR? not fuel pump/s I presume?, replace fuel accumulator again?

This is a single family owned car since new, all history understood and issues quickly addressed.

Mine starts immediatly but cant maintain idle after 1-2 seconds of starting smoothly. I suspect its the WUR and maybe injectors not spraying properly.
If yours starts but dies or runs rough after a smooth start then its probably WUR or injectors.

negative morghen, very, very hard start. Once started (can smell the starter begging for mercy) it's "ok", rough for a bit. WUR might be suspect as well, but I just ordered a AAV from Ebay (NOS $200, Bosch 0 280 140 100). I also had the female connector crack off, at least the outer edges, as I removed the AAV. If anyone has tricks to replace this, I'm all ears.

Should have by Sat, Nov 17th, so I'll let you know what I find. My dad (org owner) replace injectors several years ago (prob 10). Other than some of the small hoses, WUR and cold start valve are all that's left to replace, that I know of.

maybe also check the mixture setting to be right, i adjusted mine a bit and now starts much better.

I received the the new (NOS) AAV (Bosch 0 280 140 100, $200 on Ebay) today and installed. It was still hard to start, didn't fire right up, but definitely better than before.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm excited about getting a new WUR now, maybe she'll start right up!?

I would invest in fuel pressure gauges and do a thorough test before throwing money at parts in the hope you get the right one.

Fuel pressure tests will show if the WUR or other parts are faulty.

Have you done fuel flow or injector spray tests?

Wire up the cold start injector to a manual switch, depress that while cranking and see if that fixes the cold start issue.

thanks Ozzie, you are surely right to suggest investing in the equipment, and for me, learning how to test those things. Fortunately, this time, I think I guessed right with the AAV. She fires right up, to a point I haven't seen in years. Additionally I'm going to order a new CONNECTOR HOUSING TWO POLE BOSCH part #R022906231A from Auto Atlanta as the current/previous disintegrated as I removed it from the AAV. Obviously still in working order today, but I'm sure it will give me issues down the road. Particularly as the stiff motor mounts I put in and lack of the engine vibration dampener make for a lot of vibration.

Also thanks safe, I've heard that suggestion on the boards before, I'll keep it in the back pocket.

Next the brakes and seats need some love!

thanks 924RACR, I just had a wonderful drive through SE Boise and up to Lucky Peak. I just couldn't stop driving. I'm back on this project for a while.

Unrelated except to your talking about a drive through Boise -- if you want a good drive in that area head north on 55 up towards Banks then jump on Banks-Lowman Road then 21 up to Stanley. It's a couple hours challenging and beautiful drive. Lots of switchbacks and elevation changes. Great scenery. Every time I come back out to ID I try to drive through that part of the state. You're lucky to live around there!

jacobroufa - I was hoping I could get someone to bite! Yes, never driven my Porsche (at least this one) up there, but certainly go to Stanley and across to Sun Valley/Ketchum often. Not sure I'd trust this 924 for that, at least currently. I tried to talk my wife into taking it up to Sun Valley last summer, but in the end I'm glad we didn't.

Happy to hear someone else familiar with the amazing country just a few minutes north of Boise, all the way to Canada.
