Hi. I am a long time multiple Porsche owner. I have a 1990 928 S4 and a 2005 Cayenne S. I do all my own wrenching when possible.
This is my first 924 variant. I recently purchased a 1980 931 with 89,000 or so that had been subject to someone thinking they could make a race car out of it. It has the engine (sans AC and air cleaner assembly). It has no interior and I'll have to totally rebuild the dash and door panels as well as carpet since the PO gutted it to try to make the race car.

The prospect of this work doesn't scare me so much, it's knowing that I don't know a lot about this model that makes me hesitate now and then. The 928 was, after a while, not that bad to maintain with the support system in place on Rennlist. With that help, I have basically taken the entire car apart and put back together, including the engine(and it runs perfectly).

As I said, I am a member of Rennlist but the 931 is kind of forgotten over there and doesn't seem to have the support that the 928 does (or even the Cayenne).

I also bought a 1978 924 as a parts car (has a full interior that will need to be recovered).

Hoping some owners that have resurrected one or more of these could chime in and lead me away from the gotcha parts of getting one of these back to pristine condition. This poor 931 is to the point I am going to have to purchase/manufacture and entire wiring harness for it due to all the lamp cord/speaker wire I have found spliced in the harness. A little daunting but nit impossible. I mean really, this is no 928 when it comes to electrics so I have that going for me.

Thanks in advance for advice/comments.

hi Jeff and welcome
I must admit I joined this forum recently (after being just a reader), and it's really stuffed with lot of helpful folks!
I'm sure we'll help you sort out any issues, and me myself I'm now much more experienced with 931 after a while (and the issues with my engine), and I was completely noob
Please share some pics!

Yes, sorry my bad. As we say in Rennlist. This post is worthless without pics.

Not if I can bring it back to life. I can't say it will come back 100% stock on all the parts (perhaps modern ignition/fuel delivery system like a Mega Squirt) but it is a solid car with very very little corrosion.

It will be great to see that beauty back on roads
Body works is your bigger nightmare, with mechanics you can always go a bit that or other way. If CIS is incomplete, switching to MS and EFI would work great. Add there Intercooler to that and you have a piece of a nice reliable car, a wolf in sheep’s skin as we say it here in Poland.

Welcome!

Save her! There are so few 931s left running. There are plenty of folks on here with enough parts to get her going. Let me know on interior.

After you go through her, pop back on and let us know what you need. Some stuff is nla but lots of folks know where to find it.

They are really fun cars when you get em going

Cheers

Why would you not save it. Values are now viable to ensure a salvageable 931 should not be parted or bastardised

Looks like a great project.

I owned a 924 about 22 years ago and bought my 931 as a project three years ago. It has now been on the road for just over two years am about 98% there. I still have some projects left like paint correction and some rubbers that still need replacing.

It looks like you have a series 1. This is a simpler car to work on than the series 2 where you have to deal with much more complex antique electronics.

This board has been extremely helpfull while I was resurecting my car. The most valuable lessons I learnt while bringing her back to life:
1) The Haynes manual is great but almost always incorrect when it comes to details on the 931
2) Get the factory manuals and read them until you fully understand what it is saying
3) CIS is a system that must be in balance, other then electronic injection you can't fix just one thing.
4) The most important bits are NLA.

And the most important eye opener...

These cars are sooooo much more fun than I though. The gap between a 924 and 931 is gigantic.

Enjoy the process!

Fellow 928/931 owner here. Although my 931 was in good driver shape when I got it, so nothing near as daunting as the task before you. I'm no great mechanic though (I'm currently getting my butt kicked by tie rods on the 928, if that tells you anything ) Anyway, it's good to see some new members on the board starting these projects.

I have a similar story....

Her inner workings (S1):

Went into her tub (S2):

The body on the S1 was too far gone...the left side was all bondo, and the interior was very rusty. She had been sitting in that field for quite some time. The S2 didn't have an engine (but I got everything with the car), so I threw the S1 engine which I had just rebuilt, the harness and all running gear that was rebuilt in the much nicer tub. She is a bit of mutt, but she goes like stink and is is a great car to drive. I can attest that the 931 is a great and very capable car. Having a 924 NA race car and all...the 931 is faster and almost as good handling as the tuned up NA.

Keep us updated on the build! And good luck.
