I kind of thought I'd got to the end of all the idiotic things a previous owner had done to my 924. Most were reasonably harmless things like munting the power hookup to the radio, or putting the blinker cancel ring in upside down when installing an aftermarket steering wheel. Well I found a potentially dangerous one. And I've had the car 8 years!

A previous owner had removed the shims next to the boots inside the steering rack. According to the specialist, they did this to try to improve the turning circle. Unfortunately, after a while, the boots move in and make the rack stiff. This is what happened to me the other week after I hit lock moving into a parking space. Cost me a cool $1000+ to fix.

Wade.
