So how many of you replaced your timing belt cover? This thing is annoying. I know of at least one car that was purchased (used) with no timing belt cover, so a PO at least did not replace that one (assuming they all came with them). I thought I read once that someone in the 928 world didn't replace theirs and noticed increased belt wear, but I could be remembering that wrong.

(I'm assuming for the sake of argument that I'm able to eventually get it off without going mad and cutting it off or something)

Both my cars have no cover.
I don't drive in extreme conditions and that's working fine for me.
The belt is cheap and i replace them every other year.

careful not to damage/cut the timing belt while you're taking the cover off.

The engine looks nicer with a nice painted cover imo. I trimmed it a little bit and now it's super easy to take of.

Just one extra bracket with a rubber to keep it steady.

I'm kinda liking this idea of trimming the cover so it fits easily...

I drilled out the spot welds holding the the lower flange section and removed it. Much easier to deal with, but to be honest, I've yet to replace it as I wanted to recheck belt tension after a water pump replacement.

I like the look seeing the cam wheel spinning.. Different strokes..

I also grab and inspect my timing belt like every time I open my hood, and before I close my hood I almost always check very well that I haven't left anything in there that can get caught in the timing belt..

I think the 928 belt cover is more of like a sealed belt compartment type thing that keeps the belts perfectly clean, no?

The 931 cover is more of a, don't get your fingers or large foreign objects in there, sort of thing, I think..

Forgot to install mine, took it in hand, watched closely what I need to do to install it... put it on shelf. I’m not missing it at all. And me as well - I like to see the timing wheel spinning.

You are correct, the 928 cover is in three parts and covers the belt and various rotating bits completely.

I've had mine on for the last year. Less clutter in the garage for me, and it looks cool! I can still see the timing marks if needed.

Funny, I've been debating on whether or not to put it back on before I wrap up this maintenance! Still can't decide!!

-----------

Update: installed it today.

I'm regretting week-ago-me's decision to do this, after last night's debacle with the leaking water pump... I'll probably still put it back after it's all said and done anyhow!
