Posted: Wed Nov 08, 2017 1:29 pm Post subject: Fixin' Dash Cracks ? |
|
|
I have a so-so dash that has a few cracks. Anyone have a way to fix them up ? I remember back in the early '80s there were always TV ads about this crap you could buy (most likely known to the great state of Kalifornia to cause cancer yadda-yadda) that you could colour tint and use to fix the vinyl and such of your favourite crappy American roadster. Shit worked like a charm back then so there must be a new and improved version somewhere...? Our insurance will grant me Collector plates for the car provided I can get a crack-free dash and re-cover the seats so there are no splits in them. It is worth it as it qualifies me for $300 a year insurance.
If I can fix these bastards I won't have to buy a new one from Thomas at Werk924...

In order to get a classic insurance you need to fix THOSE cracks? :O They are basically non-existant..
I would just put some black silicone into them and that's it. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Your insurance company is on crack!
I bet they don't have many customer qualifying for the Collector plate.
I'll buy your "so-so" dash if you buy another one. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Unfortunately they have a fairly strict set of criteria in order for us to qualify as a 'Collector' car and get almost free insurance. $300 per year is a gift really so if I need to spend a bit to fix the cracks I really don't mind. I could just insure her normally but it is about $1200/ year so....yeah it's better to get 'Collector' status.
Raceboy I wish I could just use silicone but they won't accept that, a bit ghetto. I think I will have to end up ordering a new dash from Thomas in Deutschland...frickn frack.
On a side note I think that despite the hoops you need to jump through it means that cars here with the special status are genuinely very, very nice. Changes it up a bit to see beautifully restored classics instead of the normal parade of M3's, Maclarens, Bentleys, etc.

Wow, thats very specific from the insurance company. I pay 185usd a year for a fully covered insurance, that itself is a reason to keep the car forever
If you buy the dash from thomas i hope there will a review and detailed pics, I've been looking at those for a while.. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

I pay around 130 euros per year for insurance, I really do not get that sanctionaized and organized robbing called insurance in UK and Canada...
If some service is made mandatory by law it is clear that normal market logic does not apply but obviously insurance companies have beaten some lawmakers dizzy with cubic dollars...
I just have hard time to understand how some countries that lead in many areas are just so slow and yesteryear what conecrns bureacracy... (talking about public services and communication with country and all that slow paperwork, ugh *facepalm*). _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

When I fixed mine a few years back, I used some fancy 2 part filler and did a how to on it. May of them came back after about 2 years. I also partially covered the dash with some 2 oz fiberglass and a thin wood boat building epoxy, West or System 3 are examples, applied with a foam roller. They have stayed fixed. If you go that way I have plenty of the fiberglass and could send you some. It costs about $4 per 38" running yard and you would only need 2 or 3 square feet at most. _________________ Mike

Well Raceboy I think we have different insurance levels between Eastern Europe and here. I'm not 100% sure what coverage you get for that in Estonia and for damned sure I'm no economics professor but it can't be much. Especially with such a small population pitching into the insurance pot...
We do pay a lot but we can also get a fair amount if we are injured through no fault of our own. For example, if someone hits me and I get injured badly I can sue them for millions of dollars and will most likely get it. This settlement money is also tax free which means that while I may be crippled I can still support my family and maintain a fairly high quality of life.
Life here is pretty darned good and it would suck to be poor.

Glamour shot to entice Morghen to get off his ass...:
Our particular provincial insurer is actually a not-for-profit government entity so we don't have some fat-cats in the background getting rich. (except the government employees working there and milking the system but that's another story)
Unfortunately there has been a rise of a certain immigrant class (rimes with 'gina) that come here and buy $500,000 cars for their 16 year old kids to learn on. I am NOT joking about this, it is a real phenomenon and incredibly common. Since our provincial insurance is a monopoly (see 'Socialist' in Websters dictionary) they are obligated by law to have to provide these people that have zero driving experience with whatever insurance they want. An example is me coming out of Costco a few weeks ago and seeing a mid 20 something lady pull her Bentley Super Sport into a spot near the store's front door. As I walked past I noticed that the front curbside rim was completely chewed to a pulp. Like one of her ancestors in the old country had used a big 'ol double cut bastard file on it. Seriously I wondered, "how does the tire still hold air." This damage was obviously done while sliding it along the curb repeatedly while parking on the street. Crazy. Those rims must be $5,000 each at least but these certain rich folk just don't give a crap or understand how it makes mere mortals like me cringe to see it.
So you see, the economics will never add up for us peasants. When someone has a $500,000 car and only pays $10,000/ year for insurance while I drive a $2,000 Honda Civic and pay $1,500/ year insurance the numbers don't ever equal out. To do so would mean they would need to pay $375,000/ year to cover their share of the insurance pie. But, we all know that won't happen anytime soon unfortunately.
Mike, I appreciate the offer homey but they will not accept a fibreglass covered dash. Olive's dash actually is already glass covered by the PO but it needs to come out. The rules state it needs to be 'like for like' which means if it was some type of vinyl from the factory then I need to replace it with some type of similar vinyl. Thank you though for the offer.
So, Claude my man, what's your offer for the dash in the pics ? It's really nice....( ; lol

The basic insurance coverage is the same. If someone hurts me in traffic accident obviously I can sue him/her for whatever amount I want (though it has to be based on actual loss not just hurt my finger and sue for 10 million like in US.) Actually it can be waheterv amount I want but what will be granted is another story.
When there is an accident then insurance covers all losses related to the accident without suing (car, health etc).
I still think that insurance in many countries (and healtcare in US) is something that is very-very biased towards business side and consumer has basically no protection against companies. Companies can price as high they want and there is nothing anyone can do and that is wrong when it is something a consumer MUST buy and cannot opt for NOT buying.
You are badly mistaken when you put Estonia to Eastern Europe. Geographically it can be done but culturally Estonia is closest to Finland (our languages are very similar) and other Nordic countries and not even our neighbours Latvia and Lithuania (other Baltic countries).
Just few numbers, Estonia is ranked 6th in the world of economic freedom (and 2nd in Europe), is first internet freedom, lowest national dept of GDP in Europe (and one of the lowest in the world), ranked most entrepreneurial country in Europe and one of the most advanced state digitally.
I have travelled in many many countries and tbh there's only 2-3 places in the world I would consider equal or better to live than home
I must say though, that if one lives in certain situation for quite some time, it becomes persons new reality (like accepting high insurance fees or healthcare system that is more like insult to taxpayer).
Yes, we have free healthcare and college education (and Estonia is in 3rd place in high-school education in the world and 10th with college education and science).
People often think of Estonia as poor little country, let them live in their thoughts _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

I certainly meant no disrepect in the matter. I would never lump you guys in with the likes of Bulgaria or Ukraine....lol. Although the big Red Bear on your doorstep is a bit frightening.
All I was saying is that we do pay more but also get more out. In simple math :
Estonia population = 1.3 million x $130 Euro / year does not add up to being able to afford decent payouts in the case of crippling accidents.
I am not sure what it costs to live there for 1 year comfortably but if someone is injured and has a wife and 2 kids to support then I would need at LEAST 2 million dollars for a settlement payout. That would be $50,000 per year times 40 years. And here in Canada I would get that because there is more money in the communal pot. If even 100 people a year were crippled or badly hurt in Estonia and got payouts like ours then that right there would use all of the money in the bank and then some !
But....like I said before, an economics prof I am certainly not.
Back to cars....
