Today I just got my 1980 Porsche 924 started. She idles beautifully with wonderful response to the accelerator! Im ecstatic!
Anyways i'm moving in 10 days and have to drive 350+ miles with her to get to my new home. I will also start to drive her around today. First the garage, then around the block, then to in town and above 40 mph, and last on the highway near me.
Is there any tests I should do or check anything before I start my treck?

What ive done to her:

Cleaned some grounds.
New fuel.
New injectors.
New plugs.
New fuel pump.
Some new gaskets.
New ignition switch.
Cleaned up MAF and Fuel dizzy.
Then an oil change too after driving it around.
I also have an extra DME relay because I have heard of too many horror stories of it failing.. With a homemade switch if all else fails.

Enjoy your first drive!

If you have not replaced the brake fluid I would do so before you go on your roadtrip. Also make sure your alternator is pushing enough volts. Also make sure all your lights work.

Good luck!

Also, resist the temptation to drive the car hard. Once you get comfortable with it, you'll want to push it further toward the limits, but this can cause old parts that haven't run in a while to break (like alternator and water pump bearings, old hoses, old belts, etc.). Get the car where you're going, and save the hooning for a time when you have backup / rescue available.

Where are you driving to and from? You might even be able to enlist the help of local forum members should you have a break down.

That is the most important advice you can have.
In my opinion if the car runs you should NOT do any last moment jobs.
If the brake liquid is old thats fine, it will get you to your destination safely...but if you do a rush last minute brake fluid change and mash up one of the lines or threads...that wont help you in any way.

I've done many long distance trips and i do believe i own the record of 3000miles with two 924s
I live by the rule: if it isnt broken then dont fix it and dont break it if you cant repair it.
I would do checks on all things but no complicated jobs before the trip...well unless the car really needs it.
Needless to say i did not replace the brake fluid in my 924s before the big trip...i checked that the fluid is clean and level...then moved on to other parts of the car.

I might give you a run for your money on that claim.

As stated above, check that your alternator is putting out enough amps.

Change other fluids. Flush the radiator and refill with pentofrost NF (blue). Also flush the brake fluid with fresh fluid. You don't want to be far from home with an overheating car or no brakes.

I would also change the air filter and fuel filter before you go driving it around. The old filters may be clogged or gummed up. free flowing air and fuel will make your far run way better.

More advice: Drive it as much as possible before your trip. It took me about 1000 miles before I felt I had enough bugs worked out to call mine reliable. The more miles you put on, the more will come to your attention. Also, on your trip, bring a couple short jumper wires with blade connectors on the ends. I have a few in my glove box. They've saved me a few times between jumpering the feul pump relay and my thermo switch on the radiator. These cars have dead simple electronics. If something fails, most of the time a jumper wire will at least get you where you're going. Bring extra fuses too. you may need them.

Most of all, have fun! One of my favorite activities is road tripping in my 924. I've been putting 500-600 miles on my car every weekend. This is what they were made for!

You just need that factory hitch option

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! This is truly amazing.
I did run into one hitch though.. As i started to drive I noticed white smoke out of the exhaust. And radiator fluid coming out of the tail pipe.. With some in my oil too!

Head gasket time. Any tips? Feels pretty straight forward.

I will be renting a trailer with my uhaul now.. But I will use all this great advice once I move in! Thank you!
