We too bought a new 'winter', (as in Arizona style) vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The 'stretched' two door. Here is a poser shot in Monument Valley this past October. Lifted and locked.

Thanks, hauled the Jeep behind the RV there, and to Moab and Canyon De Chelly for two weeks! Going to Lake Chapala, MX for a month next week. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Nice rides guys.
Cayenne's are getting pretty cheap down here for early high mileage like yours Dan. I'm tempted but is it really a Porsche? I know the equipment is probably very nice but does it have a racy feeling? Or is it another SUV? _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

In my book, it's definitely a Porsche. The non-linear acceleration on the V8 turbo is sublime. And the adjustable air-ride is just plain bad-ass.
I'm seriously contemplating adding the light bar and rear spoiler as on the TransSyberia Cayennes (factory rally entrants) and getting a set of the BF Goodrich All Terrain tires on for some summer fun. My plan is to use this as a comfortable winter commuter for the infrequent occasion I need to drive to visit my clients on-site, a grocery getter, a puppy wagon, and hopefully a car-camping platform with some mild off-roading in the warm season. Everything I've read indicates they are very capable machines for soft-roading and mild climbing / fording, which is all I need. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

My veterinarian has one and he really loves the thing. Being in Iowa he often needs to do site visits to animals on farms and such. He claims the Cayenne is more capable than his old Cherokee on crappy roads and much better and smoother on the highway. Other than the bad rap some of the early ones have for poor build quality they seem like good vehicles. The doc recommends it, if you need an SUV. _________________ Its only money, you can always get more.

Lovely wheels on that Cayenne !
Nice color as well.
I'm tempted to get one as well as they are not too expensive...but not the V8s as those are incredibly expensive just to tax and insure here...like 4k/year. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

Yes, on-road ride quality is definitely better than the Jeeps I've owned and rented. Our Suburban has excellent ride quality for long-haul comfort. The Cayenne does too, but still offers a sporty feel when you want it. Mine has three different settings for adjusting the dampers: comfort, normal, and sport, or something like that.
The color on this one was definitely a selling point. There are a LOT of white, black, silver, gold, and red Cayennes. I was deciding between this one and an '05 S (non-turbo) that was wine red. I like the silver/grey interior on this one. The color scheme matches "ideola's garage", which is appropriate since I am buying this as a business asset
I've seen the base models go for $2K less than I paid for this one, I think they are also a great deal. The main thing is to make sure that the plastic water pipes have been upgraded to metal, that the cardan shaft has been replaced, and that the coil packs and plugs have been upgraded / replaced. This one had been very well maintained mechanically and cosmetically. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Great purchase Dan!
An acquaintance of mine has similar vehicle (and colour) for several years now and with the right tyres, is a very serious off-road device....as all first series Cayennes were.
You've obviously sussed out the probable fault items, so you're good to go.
As for a Cayenne being a proper Porsche......just as much as a 928! And certainly has much more Porsche 'goodness' than an early 356, 914 or 924! _________________ 80/81 932/8 ROW |

Hey Dan, love the winter sled! Nice idea. I think you need one final addition
....Some winter tires. I know technically crazy but fun on a bog SUV. Might matter more where you are at too
Highly recommend Hancook RW. Affordable and they last. almost 5 winters so far on these. I don't like US wheel paint compared to say toyota so I got separate wheels for winter which also allowed me to step down to 18's

I was lucky, the Cayenne came with a set of 1-season old summer and a set of 1-season old winter tires! The previous owner was nice enough to have the winters swapped onto the wheels so it's all ready for the snow that's coming this weekend!
I'm probably going to find another set of wheels before spring so I can just leave the summers and winters mounted to rims, rather than having to swap them onto a single set of wheels. I'm also contemplating a set of 18" wheels for off-road use with some BFG All Terrain tires...we'll see! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
