Question: Should the fuel pump run when the ignition key is in the “on” position?
Background: 1988 924 S. I am finishing my first project on this car: replacing small vacuum lines, replacing hoses under intake manifold (new gaskets), injectors out to WichHunter, new cap, rotor (just finished cutting it off with a dremel, and I’m off to Homie for new metric bolts), plugs, wires, replace the AOS seals and slotted the dipstick bracket. All in all, a nice “get to know ya” project.
I put the battery back in the car to pressurize the fuel system (to check for leaks) , turn the key to “on” and nothing from the fuel pump. Everything else seems normal, door open bell, dash lights come on, tack bounce.
I did not remove the DME relay before reconnecting the battery. Frankly, it’s in an awful location.
Do I need to engage the starter (crank the engine) to get the fuel pump running? I recall that I put the ignition key in the 0 position (everything off), Position 1 is “on”, Position 2 is “start,” after the car starts the key springs back to Position 1. Is that correct?
Thanks,

Fuel pump doesn't run with key in "on" position unless the engine is running.
If you build a short jumper wire, you can run the fuel pump using the DME relay socket under the dash. See Clark's for details. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I built a DME jumper per Clark's (Thanks Rasta) and managed to remove the DME and insert the jumper leads (that's a tight spot-and my car is currently 15" in the air on 4 jack stands). The fuel pump started running and...all connections are tight, no leaks.
The fuel lines are another story. The high pressure delivery line is weeping fuel. When I started this project I noticed the fuel line hoses looked to be in poor condition. I could see cracks in the hoses, but they were intact. I suppose moving them around to remove and replace the Intake Manifold caused/contributed to the failure. I'm probably lucky, at least I saw it before I started driving. Avoided the 924 flambe.
Tomorrow I will source and buy correct length lines. And I thought I would be driving by the weekend. _________________ 1961 356 Cabriolet
