still trying to get temp and fuel gauges happy, can't find the ground point up under the dash, we had erratic readings from both for a while, now nothing, really suspect the grounds, where is that grounding point?

pulled gauge, disassembled, could tell right away that wasn't the problem, all was tight and clean, lost a gauge light in the battle
All the other idiot lights in that pod are fine so why the temp and fuel are inop is just weird, the temp gauge does "energize" with the key coming on, the needle snaps up to attention but never moves with engine operation, the fuel gauge is totally dead which is very strange since it worked badly, then I messed with the sender then it worked fine, then it went dead, could be two unrelated problems, like bad temp temp sender and bad fuel sender at the same time
later that night
pulled wire off sender on engine block, grounded it, needle maxed, then used on old potentiometer and needle followed my adjustments
I guess it's the sender.
Anyone want to trade for the '87 924s sender we bought a few months ago and won't fit our '83 944 block?

Have you thought about drilling the hole in the block and tapping to correct thread for the 924S sensor? That is what I will do on mine I plan to have my wife hold a shop vac hose by the drill bit to keep chips out of the water jacket.

Did you check the big ground cluster under the intake?

Where is this exactly? Could be a problem. We lost everything to an engine fire before we were really familiar with the car so it could easily be I missed something obvious.

I did but I don't think it's a sender/gauge mismatch anymore. I think it's just a bad circuit--bad sender/bad ground. I ordered a new early 944 sender and with a new sender and more ground chasing we'll go from there.

new sender arrived, installed; all good, thanks for the input everyone, just to clarify, it seems the early 944 sensor (pre '85?) the "button style" works with the later 924s gauge, at least on test run around the block it read in the middle of the gauge where you'd think it would be.
What a lot of red herrings.
