Thought you guys might want to see a pic of the gears of my 924S transmission. The shop is putting in new bearings [mine are groaning and making bad noises].

Yep. Since everything is down and open...I might as well have him do all of them. I am lucky that I have a Porsche shop right near my home and they have the expertise to do it right. Most transmission shops wouldn't even touch a 924.

After looking at the pic, I may have second thoughts on replacing a bad syncro! Any thoughts on doing this yourself?

BTW..Been MIA from the site for a long time, hope I can see some members from years past!

Here is what my mechanic, (with over 40 years experience on Porsche's) told me about the 924 transmission in his own words: "it is the most difficult Porsche transmission I have ever worked on, a complete pain in the ass, and much worse than any 911".

He charged me $1,700 to take it down, replace all the bearings and any other part that needed to be replaced, wash and clean the transmission housing and all of its parts in the utility sink, and meticulously put it all back together. It works absolutely perfect now.

I had called 5 other transmission shops in both NY and NJ for pricing and not one would even touch it at any price. Not even shops that specialize in Porsche.

Not to dog on New Jersey transmission shops, but the 924s transmission is really not that epic. I did mine at home in my garage using a hydraulic press and an assortment of gear pullers/seperators and the factory shop manual. Getting the right parts was more work than the rebuild.

I might have misspoken or I think you misunderstood what I wrote. I never said it was 'epic'. I meant that he was comparing this transmission to all the others that he has worked on and that this one was more difficult and time consuming. He said the 911 is a breeze compared to this. He did not have any difficulty refreshing my transmission, he was simply indicating that had this been a 911 it would have taken less time and cost me less money. He said 'the 924 might be the poor mans Porsche but it ain't any cheaper to fix than an old 911'.

As for the other transmission shops in NJ - yep they are a bunch of pansies.

I will disagree with him that it is "a complete pain in the ass". That 1700 should make his ass feel better though.

I suspect the time is a reflection of his familiarity with the transmission. There's not a lot of difference in the time it takes me to do a complete rebuild on a 944/924S series transmission and, for example, a 915 or G50 transmission from the same era. Knowing the transmission (rather than having to constantly refer to the manual) and having the special tools makes a big difference in time and effort. Cheers,
