|
|
I decided to go with Bilstein shocks and strut inserts to replace my original components on my 87 924S, and I should get them in before this weekend. Looking through the guides on Clark's Garage, it doesn't seem terribly difficult.
However, I do not have an air impact or special Porsche tool for the front strut inserts. Is this going to prevent me from getting them installed?
Also, are there any important torque specs not mentioned in Clark's guides that are good to know?
Thanks! _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

Lack of an impact gun won't stop you, as long as you have the appropriately sized deep offset box wrench, so you can turn the large retaining nut while holding the shaft:

Spring compressors are a must. They can be rented from many autoparts stores.

If you dont have an impact, and cant hold the center of the piston shaft with an allen key, you can just grab it from the bottom with vice grips. Its not going to hurt things if you are throwing the insert away. _________________ 87 924s

Woo! That was actually easier than I thought! I only had one hang up trying to get the strut insert out, but everything else was cake!
For the strut tower, I had some of those pass through socket wrenches, so i was able to use a 22mm passthrough socket along with a 7mm allen socket at the same time (one through the other, much like using an offset wrench).
The car handles sooo much better now
I did unfortunately discover that one of my CV boots has torn, but that'll be a repair for another day.[/img] _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

Were the old inserts gas cartridges or oil bath type? _________________ 87 924s

They were the stock oil bath type. I read up on how some people put ATF fluid in the strut tube when they changed out to gas strut inserts, so I left a little fluid in the strut tube (since I didn't have ATF lying around). _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

If you were not 8 hours away from me i would swing by and buy those oil bath inserts off you. Been looking for a set but everybody always throws them away so you never see them on ebay. _________________ 87 924s

I'm not sure that you would want them. When I say they were shot, I'm talking that one of them had the spring seal literally out of the cylinder sliding around and would have needed to be completely rebuilt.
I can always hold on to them for you if you were still interested and pass through here. I'll likely hold on to them anyways because I like seeing my old parts lying around, lol. _________________ '87 Porsche 924S |

Last time i checked it was impossible to find wiper seals for those things, but i have been wanting to get a set and try machining a nylon bushing on the lathe, that will hold a more common seal size. Basically I can find wiper seal that fits the piston shaft and make a bushing that makes it fit the tube. Why bother? I just like the idea of something that i can rebuild rather than throw away. _________________ 87 924s
