I got hung up for a while trying to get my hands on torches, got sick of it and built this..

You'll never get it hot enough they said.. You'll have to use coal they said..

Got it stupid red hot, ran it over to the shed on a pipe, zapped it, and buried it..

Dug a nice hole right in the boat shed, lined it with dry sand, stuck the manifold in there, about another 5 gal bucket of dry sand, then covered the top with what we dug out of the hole..

My welder said he can't believe how well it flowed, I looked when he was done and it was still swirling, said he'd never welded something that hot before.. Only used about 2" of that nickle rod @ 100 amps and he said he could have had it turned down a little more..

I'm pretty anxious to dig it up but I'll give it probably until late tonight.. Didn't hear no tinks and cracks so I think it might have worked.. If it did I can start putting this thing back together..

Well....

It doesn't look pretty, but I definitely can't see daylight through the manifold anymore..

It seems the weld kinda sunk a little bit, but it sealed it up pretty good..

My welder says he wants to go over it again, and for me to not get it quite so hot next time, but I think it's good enough as is and I don't want to tempt this thing all over again..

What do you think?

I actually have a fair amount of cast iron welding under my belt and have had the best luck arc welding BTW

If it didn't crack when it cooled down its a good sign...a very good sign.

I've seen a few attempted repairs, and I have to say, this looks like one of the best.

No, I didn't hear any cracking or metal tinking sounds during or after welding but I had it buried within like 30 seconds of the end of the weld.. Welded it right next to the hole and buried it instantly.. I can find no cracks on it anywhere..

Pulled it out of the [s]turbo[/s] E-Ram fire and had it buried all in like 1min 30sec tops, still glowing..

Little bit of progress on the "Adapter Sandwich"

[img]http://i.imgur.com/gCYD6Ni.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI7Z-D0VKNo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HURXiXxkNgs

So where I'm at..

The V8 FD is going to fit in location - check
I can't really do anything about the fuel lines for it until I get the head and intake back together. Also I'm thinking I got Ebay scammed on some of the injector line hardware I bought a long time ago I haven't received yet..

So get the head back together and figure out crazy fuel lines, then come up with what I'm going to do with all my vacuum lines and such, then a bunch of crazy electronics, none of which is going to be quick/simple/easy..

Still a whole lot of work ahead but it's going to be the coolest thing ever with insane potential so I'll keep picking away at it.. Just have to keep thinking how awesome, unique but modestly original looking ish under the hood it is going to be... Also the end all be all of all things fueling, this should be the end of worrying about that..

Thinking about trying to reindex the FD on the upper AFM housing to give a better route for my tank/return lines and how to hide the fuel line 2-1 splitters for 8-4 siamesed injectors.. These splitters are what hasn't shown up yet though..

IDK.. This part is the dirty trench warfare, where to goin gets tough..
There is a bit of a difference between just performing some mechanical job vs making stuff the world has never scene before.. I'm beginning to think I find myself making stuff a bit too often.. It's usually easier said than done..

Very cool Eddie, I have a Mercedes unit on the shelf, so can't wait when you finished your project!

Did you rebuild the motor with a stock or MLS head gasket?

It will be a new stock reinz gasket and ARP studs, in the OP..

But really it's just sitting on the old HG with 2 old head bolts and 1 intake bolt for clearance testing so I could make sure I have clearance for the charge tubes and cam pulley..

But now I can start putting things together in "operational condition" finished product style..

Might happen in 2017 if I'm lucky..
Their is still too much left that needs to be done to think about all at once..
But the rest of everything should not be possibly impossible..

Had two stock HGs fail on me. BassGT had problems with stock as he went down the modified and higher boost route. Mittelmotor also go for MLS HG's. Just saying. My MLS has lasted 2 years now at 1.0-1.3bar. The stock HG's lasted less than 6 months.

That's disappointing to hear..

I bought the ARPs mainly for their reusability because I expect to be back in there a time or 2.. Figured that aspect would be a pretty smart thing to spring for at this stage in the game..

I got a super deal on that gasket kit for about the price of a reinz gasket alone and it came with a bunch of the rarer turbo gaskets/seals I can use..

The head needs more work than just a skim, it works but needs a rebuild..
Long story short I don't want to skim the head for $100+ and then have it get lunched by who knows what is going to blow first..

The reinz gasket, and the engine in general, should get me through getting this injection setup and tuned well enough to get that project out of the way and done. Starting to do the engine now would just put me so deep in a whole I don't even want to imagine..

I hope the next engine project I will do will be a bottom end, head, and fresh turbo all in one go so their are not weak links in the chain where 1 component can take out the whole package.. Right now everything is a weak link so just doing 1 component is a big gamble..

Next project..
