Why does the 931 engine mount bracket has an extra bracket on the bottom ?

Good question. I just sent one of each out to be powder painted and wondered the same thing. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car

Hmm. Different part numbers in PET. Will have to look at one of my unmolested 931s to see if there's anything mounted to that little dongle. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Mine came from a ROW Left Hand Drive.
Dan will figure it out. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car

I just checked on an all OEM US-spec 78 NA, and an all OEM US-spec 82 931. The NA doesn't have the extra dongle, the 931 does. However, there is nothing that I can see from up top that is attached to it. The A/C hoses run right behind there, maybe there's something on the back side that I can't see, but I can't ever recall mounting anything to that spot. Mystery remains. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

For a change I feel like I can contribute ...
I save pictures of 24 stuff like crazy and this was off Ebay a short while ago, for an unmolested engine. It was listed for some big pocket change but anyway.... the answer ?

Ok, now I am laughing at myself. Contributed?...nope.
Here is another view. Bites that this is on a stand in a way. Engine bay would have been better but it is a nice example.

With the bolt and spacer installed as in the picture, I would think the mount is stiffened. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Funny, crossed my mind but I thought it was an awfully big bolt just to do that? I also thought they could have stiffened it just by connecting that sheet metal and maybe an additional spot welded section underneath. Interesting though, had me trying to zoom in on the bolt head for specs. Also, I was wondering if a GT or GTS used it for some reason?? GTR's seem to have an Aluminum mount _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

I want an engine stand like that.
The PORSCHE script plate on the intake is on upside down. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Dan you see the details nobody else does
What if its just an access opening in the mount. Once access is not needed, its stiffened by the bolt. I say this because the bracketed mount is a stiffer version since the sheet metal goes deeper in that section increasing cross sectional area, increasing stiffness. Still seems like a big bolt but interesting approach. I also don't have a mount in front of me but isn't this a welded on sheet metal 'cap' addition in this area to a standard mount?
See this pic. It isn't nearly flat like the NA version. Harder to get at the nut

you sure its not a secondary lift point for balancing the motor or the way the factories jig grabs it for assembly/installation??? _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |
