has anyone tried taking a turbo off a 931 and just bolting it directly onto a 924 NA or is the compression too high in the NA engines

does the 931 use a different starter, or is the head that different, why wont it work

The 931's starter is on the other side of the engine and goes in from behind, so it's not actually next to the engine but behind it.

A 931 starter also spins in the opposite direction than a NA

Many problems. The starter is in the way, which means you would have to relocate the starter to behind the bellhousing, like the 931. Probably means switching to a 931 bellhousing, which means using a 931 clutch and torque tube as well. It also means using a hydraulic clutch instead of a cable-operated one.

The alternator would have to move up top like on the 931.

The spark plugs are on the wrong side of the head, and would interfere with the 931 exhaust manifold, which means using a 931 head. Which means, of course, switching to 931 pistons.

Of course, you'd have to adapt the 931 fuel injection as well. And the ignition timing was re-mapped for the turbo. So maybe an '80 931 distributor as well.

Maybe an aftermarket turbo kit, like the BAE, would be a better choice. Or just buying a 931, of course.

And yes, the starter is different. It is shared with the 944.

so how did they do the starter in the 931? Is there a cover plate over the hole where the NA starter goes and how does the 931 starter mount?

Yes - a cover plate on the opening on the right side of the engine and the starter mounts to the rear left bottom of the bell housing. Real easy to remove/install.

Fit a turbo up at high level between the rad and cam, then you don't have to worry about the starter. Use something like an Audi 100 exhaust manifold upside down to get it in the right place, and make an adapter for the turbo. Use a Jap turbo like IHI.

Make sure the oil return is above the sump level too.

Use two head gaskets to reduce compression, fix the ignitian advance to 27degrees (using an old contact breaker type distributor)and fit 2 or 3 intercoolers into the nose above and below the bumper/fender(?). You'll need an extended front spoiler to accomodate them.

Fit an oil cooler too.

Run two injection systems in parallel to supply enough fuel (if you want more than 180bhp), and fit a switch on the throttle so that at full throttle the fifth injector adds more fuel. You'll probably need a larger fuel pump.

Dissable the wastegate and you should have around 300hp and a smelly clutch. Get an 8.5inch paddle clutch from AP to handle the power.

Uprate the brakes and suspension of course. )

All the above mods were done successfully to a lhd 924 (not mine), so it does work!

Yeah it's very very cool when you actually HOOK one up and watch what happens. Lovely thick white smoke out the airbox. Kind of interesting...
