|
|
There isn't much going on in this section these days, so I thought I'd share my current project...
Here's a link to my previous project, if you're interested.
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=36902
Recently, I purchased my second 924S. This one is a 1988 model and everything is original except the head unit, but it was included. Here are my two 924S' pictured together. The one in the foreground is my 951 swapped 924S, and the one behind it is my 'new' one. I plan to leave it all original, but all the seals and gaskets have to be replaced due to age, so that's what this project is.
Here are all the parts I've purchased and a list is compiled below.
Cylinder head fresh from the machine shop
Victor Rienz Headgasket set
Gates balance-shaft belt
Contitech timing belt
Beru spark plug wires
Beru distributor cap
NGK BPR6ES spark plugs
Power steering hose
Oil cooler gasket
Oil cooler seals
OPRV seal
OPRV crush ring
Oil pump drive gear
Oil pump O-ring
Front Main Seal
Air Oil Separator seals
Porsche oil filter
Water pump
Water pump Gasket
Thermostat
Thermostat seal
Block-off plate
Block-off plate seal
Here's a picture before I started tearing it down.
The cylinder walls are pristine. Also note the 10.2:1 pistons used only during the 1988 model year. These cars also differ from the previous models by having a valve on the back of the intake that electronically opens instead of having a ventrui.
As the car sits now with its head, water pump, and oil cooler removed. I plan to start putting it back together this weekend.

I ended up getting a late start this afternoon, but what a beautiful day it was! I couldn't resist getting a shot of this '84 with fuchs and sport seats that I've had the pleasure of working on a few times.
Anyway, this is a closer picture of the project car. I swapped in a spare set of hood struts right after I took this picture.
In 1988, they moved the engine stamp to just below the fourth cylinder. This is an easy way to spot these 10.2:1 engines.
New Air/Oil separator seals. You can see how the bottom seal is flattened and was leaking badly.
New oil cooler seals. Everything looked great here, but you never know when they're going to fail, so I prefer to do them while I have the head off.
[
Got the front end up so I could remove the starter and put the flywheel lock on.
Replaced the front main seal. I'll try to clean the engine up a bit more later on. I was in a rush to get as much done as I could since I got a late start.
After blowing all the crud out of the cylinders so I could put the head gasket on. I always set the pistons mid-stroke before installing the head so I can rotate the cam freely to set the timing.
Wrapped up the day by getting the head back on.

After reading your 924S/951 engine swap thread I think I'm going to enjoy following this one. You have a knack for producing very good photos and commentary which is beneficial to the novice and "old pro" as well when it comes to working on these cars...have fun with it! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

A few more parts showed up this week. Hopefully, this is everything and I can get it all back together this weekend.

Sunday morning I got the cam tower installed. I always apply a light coat of moly grease to my lifters so they don't spill out during installation.
With the tower on, I thought I would grab a picture of the Air/Oil seperator hose on the '88 models before installing the intake.
With the intake on, I started bolting up the water pump. It was around this time I noticed that it wasn't spinning easily. I had never had this issue with a water pump before so I took it back off but didn't really see anything and after some wiggling it around it was fine.
It was getting late so I just decided to just put it all back together. After topping off the fluids the car started right up and let it idle a while. Everything looked good but that water pump had me concerned, but after nearly 12 hours of working on it I was exhausted. It was already 9pm and there was nothing I could do at this point...

Tuesday, I put the new expansion tank on, then tore everything back apart and ordered another water pump to be overnighted.
The new water pump arrived the next morning, (Top).
Here's what I found...
This is the pump I overnighted.
Clearly, the impeller is too large on this one. It might have worked, but I didn't want to risk it.
This pump installed easily as it should...
Afterwards, I started it up and took it for a drive!

Getting the car running was only step one of this project. I still have a lot of things that I need to go through and fix before its 100%. I won't be able to get to those this week, but I started flipping through the huge stack of receipts that came with the car. They seem to be complete, even going all the way back to the day the car was purchased.
Anyway, I haven't had time to go through and read them thoroughly but its a lot of fun looking to see what all has been replaced over the years. I've even decided to keep the tradition going!

I really enjoy following this thread and your pictures are great! Was the first water pump a different brand then the second one? _________________ 1988 Porsche 924S Guards Red |

Thanks! They are indeed two different brands. The one with the large impeller is this GMB I bought off parts geek for $79. Some sites list it for $300, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've personally seen, and had water pumps last more than a decade, so I'm not one to get paranoid. I just try to keep a close eye on things. It doesn't feel like a cheap pump at all, and if I could find someone that could put the right size impeller on, I would use it on my turbo.

The second one is a URO and was the only decent pump I could get on such short notice. This is their high-end pump that normally retails for about $450. I thought I would clear that up because they do have some low-end pumps that look similar.

Have you investigated replacing the two upper oem rubber fuel lines to the rail? I replaced mine on the 944 Turbo, since there's a Lindsey Racing kit out there. I replaced them on my '88 924S track car, but, the 'kit' I found, the hoses were a tad short. Had to bend the firewall metal fuel lines a bit to get the hoses to reach their intended target. I want to replace them on my '88 SE, but looking for a more user friendly kit. Dave. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

RennBay sells one that works with toofah line routing. _________________ Toofah King Bad
