I have a 1988 924s. It has broken the nose off of 3 starters. I took it to the Porsche mechanic and he could not find what was causing it. Does anyone have a clue. If I can't find a solution, this car is going to the bone yard. Thanks.

What a strange problem to have.

Have you searched if any 944 folks have had similar problems?

(The 924S is the same as the 944 underneath the sheet metal)

Do you sometimes experience abrupt stops while attempting to start the engine? These abrupt stops can break the starter nose as you've described. They are caused by starter interference from either a notched bell housing or missing shielding on your speed sensor. Using an early starter would be the easiest way to eliminate the problem.

That is exactly what happens. The starter turn fine and then tries to stop. What do you mean by a notched bell housing? And where can I get an early starter? Thanks for your help.

I've seen this problem quite a few times. You should be able to dig around and find a cheap early starter on ebay. They are fatter than the later ones and fairly easy to identify.

Here's an example of a notched bell housing that I found on pelican. Some guys cut the bellhousing to make clutch jobs easier, but it can cause issues such as yours.




This is how the bell housing should look.



Just for reference to anyone having the same issue; here's an example of the early and late sensor brackets. The late bracket (right) has a shield over the speed sensor. This shielding prevents interference from the late starter when starting the vehicle. The shielding in the bottom of the picture is from another bracket and there just to show what it looks like when removed.

My bellhousing is not notched. However my speed sensor has a dent in the bottom of it. Could that be the problem? This all started when my old fat starter went out and I replaced it with the newer style. I haven't been able to find the old style. Thank you so much for your help. I didn't have a clue where to start. Now I have clues. You have been very helpful.

I suppose a dent could result in the sensor being incorrectly gaped to the tooth ring. While in most cases it is the missing shielding or cut bell housings; it's impossible to rule anything out. Perhaps you should try another sensor and make sure it is gaped correctly. Also verify that the wiring is completely intact at the harness. Frayed/broken wiring can result in a number of issues which might even allow the sensor to work but it would be completely open to interference.

OK. I will check the wiring. The sensor is fairly new. I hit it with the flywheel when installing it and put a small dent in the bottom. It is gaped correctly. The car runs great. It just breaks starters. Thanks so much for your help.

My bellhousing is cut out. I welded in a new piece. I need to drill new holes. If anyone has a bellhousing laying around, can you tell me what size the holes are? Thanks.

Both holes are 20mm.

Yep, the two holes on the bell housing for the speed and ref sensors are both 20mm in diameter.
