GAZ are a complete suspension unit in its own right and do not use and not compatible with 931 or 951 struts.

I guess the GAZ to 951 hole mounting may be adjusted to match. I understand the hole spacing and flange width are different?

Not my photo - my rears use helper springs. Fronts use different top mounts

Ahhhhh, OK, I didn't realize the GAZ was a complete strut housing. When you said coilovers, I thought you were referring to something like the Ground Control kit which adapts to the existing OEM strut housing.

So in this case, you could consider modifying the mounting plates on the GAZ strut housing to accept the 951 spindle. The center-to-center distance on the early spindle mounting holes is 58mm vs. 63mm for the 951 unit. So you could elongate both the upper and lower holes by 2.5mm to achieve the add'l 5mm required. Then, you would need to use a couple of washers on each of the bolts, as the 951 spindle flange is 18mm vs 20mm on the early units, so the washers would take up the difference.

You would still, of course, have to figure out what to do about the speedometer cable. A competent machinist could drill it for you, or you could convert to a GPS speedometer. I have been quite happy with the Speedhut unit in the Club Sport car.

Elongating is not enough, the 951 spindle is designed to take the strut at a different angle(longer a-arms) you have to square the upper holes both upwards and inwards(IIRC) but the good news is that you can still set the camber properly, i've done this and been running this for years now with no problems. Also i dont use washers but a couple of 1mm INOX spacers on each side of the spindle.

Regarding the speedo, i've converted a 944 unit to fit inside the 924 bucket and i plan to have this setup running by 92Forty...so a 944 speedo, using a 944 gearbox and sensor.

I used te early 944 guts inside the 924 bucket and plan to make a wiring loom to bring the signal from the gearbox to this speedo.

Not when sourced from an 86 951. The 86 951 has early offset and same geometry as standard 944 and early 924S. If sourcing from 87-onward with late offset a-arms, your statement is true.

Thanks for the replies. Its coming back to me why I parked this some years ago. I would want to retain the stock green speedo functionality so drilling a 85/86 951 spindle would be the only option for me.

Off to source a set of early 951 Brembos and spindles for this years 'to do' list.
