Has anyone ever put a trigger wheel inside the crankcase with the sensor projecting through the block? I just finished a rebuild on a VW 1.9TDI and noticed that the crank position is sensed via a sheet metal trigger wheel bolted to the end of the crank near the rear mail seal, and the sensor mount is a bored hole through the block. It seems like a very elegant solution, keeping a critical sensor protected and free from inadvertent adjustment.
Anyone have any input?
Thanks!! |

Oh I hate being the guy replying to his own thread, but here goes....
Would doing this to my engine be a stupid idea? Give it to me straight. |

Just seems like a lot of work to do for very little gain.
Although I can't imagine there would be any harm to it.
You'd have to make absolute sure that the trigger wheel is mounted correctly along with the sensor (which would still be exposed and liable to some adjustment or damage).
Also you have to deal with the magnetic nature of the engine block and ensure the sensor is isolated. _________________ Stefan
