I have a 1980 931 that sat for a while with bad gas. We have cleaned out the tank. The car runs, but seems to have a fuel delivery issue. The external fuel pump works fine, but the in tank fuel pump does not, so I figure the in tank is restricting the fuel getting to the external pump.
Reading back through these posts from 2015, folks mentioned by bypassing the in tank pump. Although, on a different board Ideala suggested (in 2012) that while it the in tank pump might not be necessary, he probably wouldn't bypass it on a turbo.
A few questions.
Has anyone had success running only the external pump on a 931? Any issues?
I have read on a 928 board that the in line pump can be replace with a fuel filter screen (p/n: 928.201.081.04). Has anyone had success with that?
What other way could the in tank filter be bypassed? Can one "core" out the pump?

Hey brooksdc
So sorry for the late reply but I wasn't following my emails.
I kept the external pump at the same place and the factory fitted one too. Between the external pump and the tank I added a small volvo fuel filter just in case dust from the tank comes into the external pump.
Something I do is try the keep the tank half full with fuel just to ease it up on the pump but never had any issues so far neither performance wise. |

I know this is an old thread but I have a dead in tank pump on my 924 turbo. Will a stronger external pump be sufficient for a turbo car or is the in tank pump necessary? |
