Morning all,

ever since I've had my car, the speedo needle has been showing slight jitters.

It's not like it jumps, or hangs or any such, just a bit unsteady. It's my idea that the slower the speed, the unsteadier, but it's definitely there at all speeds.

Before I go to any pains examining the cause of what may be rather usual,
I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks a lot!

Eliza

Might be fixable with some oil/grease injected.
But i think since you're going to take the cable off anyway you might as well just replace it with a new one.

Sounds like your cable doesn’t make a smooth line from wheel hub to the speedo.
Easy fix. Check along its way for nods, especially behind the dash.
Straighten it and it will run more steady according to your speed.
Cheers.

Thanks! So what you two are saying, a rock-steady needle at steady speed IS achievable? That's good.

I was afraid I was oversensitive, and would end up spending hours diving under the dash, lubing and eventually replacing the speedo cable only to be stuck with the same jitters I have now.

I don't mind going to just about any lengths to fix something but only if it needs fixing.
So, no more reason to put this off apparently .

Thanks again, I'll report back with progress once made.

Eliza

Check the end of the cable at the LH front wheel hub, it goes through the grease cap and is held with a circlip, make sure the clip is there and the grease cap is tight, I have had similar problems and found the cap loose and can rotate on the hub.

Just a quick follow-up as promised.

Re-routing and lubing the old cable helped some, but today I mounted a new one. Now I have the steady needle I was looking for at any speed .

Thanks all for your help!

Eliza--I know that this was an old post by you. My speedo is also noisy and jumps a lot. I forgot to lube it when I had the dash and instruments out.
How difficult was it to change cables? I recall it is quite tight under there.
I would appreciate your help and comments from someone who has done it.

ted -

I was doing the move the tach to the middle project, put in a new cable (longer one for VW vans, right hand drive cars) and it greatly reduced the bouncing speedo. Just doing the cable is a little bit of a job, but worth it. For <$50 it was better than lubing things up.
