Quick question, is 5th gear in a Euro car taller than a N. American car ?

TIA,
Leigh

No, shorter.

{EDIT} and also different ring and pinion. I'd be interested in the Euro R&P and short 5th if you don't have a use for it.

{EDIT} Euro G31 (G31.01 and the GT's G31.03) had all ratios the same except for 5th, as follows:
0.7059 ratio
2.9118 overall
4.1250 final
5th gear: 34/24
R&P: 8/33

North American G31 (G31.02) as follows:
0.6000 ratio
2.8286 overall
4.7143 final
5th gear: 35/21
R&P: 7/33

Really ? Odd, I would have thought they would want the higher top speed of a taller top gear...

I think we got the super tall 5th to help meet emissions requirements..
Every time you turn around on these US 924s its because emissions this, because emissions that..

No, US got taller 5th for better fuel economy. I don't like the final drive on the US 5th gear...it's great for economy but not so much for performance driving. I spend very little time on freeway with my car, so the taller 5th gear really does me no good. Most of my driving is back country roads. Also, guys driving on shorter, more technical tracks will like the shorter 5th, but the taller is handy on bigger tracks with longer straights for higher top end.

Well that's sorted then. I love the tall 5th of our cars, here in Canada I'm seldom less than 100 mph on the out of town freeways and the tall 5th makes for a relaxing ride. 4,000 rpm = 100 MPH ,easy peasy.

So do you have a Euro G31? I'll buy the R&P and short 5th if you don't want them.

No, just the opposite. I was going to look to buy one if it was taller than our NA cars.

I have the Euro 4.125 R & P along with the Euro .7059 5th gear. The ratios now are pretty good with my v8. The 4.125 makes 1st very usable and the engine does not lug like it would have with the .600.

ideola, just buy a transaxle from the UK. That's how I got mine. I went on E-bay UK and found one. Then I asked if he would ship to the us and he agreed so I bought it. It only took a week to get here using UPS.

If anyone is interested, I have Euro G31 to offer, has just worn dogteeth and syncros of 2nd gear. No LSD.

Would you be willing to remove the R&P and 5th gearset and ship it to me?

Once I get the parts needed for a G31 full rebuild, one of my four boxes is going to be culled. This will leave an additional R&P spare. Will likely be the latter part of this year as I also need to pull the LSD equipped box out of the car.

The box is apart already, I could take some photos of it if you like.
