I was just wondering, how many 931's are actually left on earth? There cant be many, I see so many in the junk yards or on ebay distroyed or in a field. And why do they always end up in a field? I forgot what the % per year it was that the population of cars dies every year. Probably not acurate but it gives a good Idea.

well, there were like 7000 of them made for the US, right? from the number I have seen in junk yards/fields and being parted out, I'd say less than half are left in running condition.

Well, I can account for five complete ones, three still intact (if you count the UWB as intact) and two completely parted out with carcasses sent to the boneyard. I have had the better part of 3 additional complete engines pass through my hands, some of the parts stockpiled on my shelves. So that makes a total of 3 out of 8. I have enough to assemble a 4th complete motor, but it won't be going back into a 931 shell unless something dramatic happens. So 3.5 divided by 8 ~= 44% Crude math, but it's probably not far off from the reality for the entire fleet...

not many, most of them seems to be standing on a field in the us or just in a barn somewhere. They lived a hard life these cars, they are and have been to cheap for their own good. My guess is not more than 30% that actually are working and on the road.

Well I stripped and took an '80 to the scrap yard and between Moorepower and I, we stripped an '82 - but I still have the tub and Tuurbo has the bottom end.

I can account for three complet cars in New Zealand plus anotehr on I've cut up to keep one of the three going - but I kept most of the mechcanical parts (and it's VIN number) so I can recreate it by using one of my N/A cars if I feel like it

really? do re-creations count? in that case i have another 931...the VIN however points its a 83 NA.

My armchair opinion on two of the three that I own, is that when an average person with a large checking account buys one of these, they do everything wrong with it during their time of ownership. For example, upon stripping down the Euro car, the turbo is coked up solid and ruined, the exhaust manifold is cracked, and repaired, and all four pistons have chunks out of them. All before 54000 miles on it, hence, it has sat under the Arizona sun for the last 6 years, in a field, er, their weedy yard! However, the head has been rebuilt with all new parts, looks brand new!

Forgot to add, my 931 is resurected by myself. The car hade been standing since 1991, bougth in 05. Not really nice condition, rusty details (althoug no rust on the body itself), blown piston rings, damaged front fender.

Since this year its back on the road nicer than in a loooong time. So it do happens that these cars actually get back on the road

I can think of few reason why people have abandoned 931's in the past.

1. They think because it is "only a 924" it is cheap to maintain. Perhaps some have recieved big invoices from maintaining and rebuilding it in a specialist shop. They've thought it is not worth it.
2. People have drove it like a Toyota Corolla and expect it to last forever. They haven't realiazed that 70's turbo technology requires some special efforts.
3. There have been lots of little problems cumulating in to big disasters. It is just easy to walk away at that point. Or perhaps they have first tried to sell it away and when this plan has failed, they have driven it in to middle of some field they own, for some bizarre reason no one can actually explain. Maybe they hope for a lightning to struck and punish it for its numerous problems.

Maintaining my 931 has cost a lot more than maintaining my previous 944's. And parts are hard to find too. Generally speaking it is quite easy to have love-hate relationship with this car.

I think they end up in fields because when the cost of repairs comes close to or exceeds the value of the car, they are left in limbo. It is hard to spend $3500 to fix a car (professionally) that is worth $2500 when it is done. It is worth $2500 when it is done, because it might cost $3500 for an imminent repair. That is the syndrome.

These cars are kept running by those who love them, rather than as transportation. And for performance, there are better cost/reliability/spec options. They probably end up in a field, because they don't stop running and get towed somewhere to be forgotten. They just start running poorly, hence they are able make it home under their own power, and they retire there. It is an interesting phenomenon.

I think there are probably 33% of 931's that are running in any reasonable capacity. Registered, insured, drivable. Have no hard data to back this up.

I drove Spike every day last summer and part of fall, and felt I could have driven it anywhere; very reliable car to me.
