The weekend finally gave me some time, tools and assistance to get into the rear drums. After continuous bleeding of the brakes, swapping out the front pads at the track last month and then another replacement of the front pads when I got home, the brakes were spongy and alright at best. A friend who is a regular at Watkins Glen with me sat me in his 944 and said, "This is how your brakes should be!". I always knew the brakes were not at their optimum, but I was always working to get them to where I knew they should be.
So we remove the castlenut and remove the brake drum. I take out one of the new shoes I have in a box, hold it up to the shoe that is currently on the car. Not much difference. In fact almost no difference at all. Here is the problem then. The rear brakes are not even being used!! I take off the passenger side and the same thing. I ell myself, I have all new springs and drum internals, I might as well replace all those so that I know they are good. Then I try to adjust the shoes. Nothing. No go. The adjusters only work on one side of each drum. This is why I have crappy brakes. With a screw driver and a hammer, and lots of wd-40, I get the adjustors working. I put the drums back on. The drums look good, so no change needed there. I put the drums back on. Do some more adjustments from the back of the brakes. Step on the pedal ........ And We Have Brakes. The way the brakes should be. Sweet. I turn the car on. Step on the brake pedal and it is as good as it was with the car off. Sweet.
Now I cannot wait to take the 924 back to the track. It needs a real test.
So next is to get the Hand brake working again. I think the cable got twisted or something and now it will not engage enough to stop the car, or go all the way to the ground. Not that it affects the way the car runs, but it would be nice to fix. Any suggestions? I was going to remove the handle, and see what I could do from inside the car. _________________ Cheers;

IIRC the adjuster is a turnbuckle style at the lever, there's a procedure in Haynes for adjustment,

Before hitting the track again, I strongly recommend removing the adjusters, giving them a proper cleaning, and reassembling with a thin layer of high temp grease.
WD40 is not known for its staying power in hot environs. _________________ Toofah King Bad
