Hi guys. Looking to check brake shoes on my 2.0. Can I use a 35mm socket and breaker bar? It measures 35mm with calipers, or do I really need the castle nut socket?

You'll need the mother of breaker bars (i.e. a jack handle or a piece of fence pipe), usually about 6-foot in length for that thing.
Otherwise a standard 3/4" drive impact socket should work there, it could make it harder to reinstall since you'll have to take the socket off to check for alignment of the nut. _________________ Stefan

Cheers Stefan. I think the nut is actually 36 mm as I have googled it plenty tonight! I haven't got one yet but I want to buy the right size!! Torque setting from Haynes says 220-290 and observe the pin hole to fix the split pin into, between these settings! _________________ Robert.

To get mine loose after 30+ years it took about a 6 foot pipe with the tires on the ground and then a 3 lb hammer , the emergency brake was on and my wife pushing on the brakes as hard as she could. A 1-7/16" socket will work as well. They normally come in 3/4" drive, you would probably twist a 1/2" drive right off _________________ Mike

That's nuts!!., Pardon the pun!! Looks like fun! I'll be looking around now for a breakers bar and 36mm socket and pole!! What's with the jack, and should I buy new castle nuts after remival, as I read that somewhere although tyre and brake fitters here don't replace these s a rule!
Cheers mate. _________________ Robert.

My borrowed1/2 snapped in two like nothing to my embarrassment. Good luck, its a bear of a nut. Best off with an impact gun. Ask any truck service place for a favor. _________________ 1980 924 N/A "the beast' |

Nut can be reused. My 1/2 inch drive 600 ftlb air impact gun spins them right off. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

You can determine the brake shoes thickness by looking into the backing plate inspection holes. Should have rubber plugs in them. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Thanks Paul. I have adjusted the handbrake almost to the max and it holds the wheels after 5 clicks!!, so I need to adjust the brakes via the adjusters at the back plate. I see there are 2 adjusters, which way do you lever each one to move the shoes towards the drum? I'm assuming one is levered up and the other down? don't want to adjust them the wrong way and end up having to try and remove the drum is it loosens off!!! so close to my car test!!
cheers.. _________________ Robert.
