I just bought a '80 931, silver and black with a badly worn pasha interior. I'm not sure whether I want restore the car, and make it a nice street car, or pull every piece of trim and all excess and make a lean track car.

Its not gonna be cheap either way.

Option 1 and I'd want to go with either black or tan leather, with black much being easier. could always restore the two front seat pasha fabric, but I'm not really digging it yet...

Option 2 would be a lot of fun, but then I feel bad about tearing the car apart.

So help me decide?

To track such an old car you have to do loads of refresh jobs and even modifications to make it last for a bit of fun. Unless you spend big on replacing old parts and improving the cooling your fun probably wont last more than a few laps.

I would restore it, hunt for good deals on interior bits, refresh the engine, suspension and gearbox and you will have a big grin on your face driving it on the roads.

I agree with Morghen on this one. I've gone through two motors on my turbo track car. One was my fault, and the other, not sure yet. But, I think head gasket, lots of steam, locked motor. I now have three extra motors for the car, two are Series 2 motors; all need rings, gaskets, seals, etc. Rounding up the parts as we speak! And, still have the original blown engine still in car, waiting.

Why choose, you can do both instead. But sure you need to know what your doing if you gonna track them. On the other hand its been extremely reliable for last years, including many trackdays.

I've been leaning towards restore. I was going give the engine bay a good going over. The car has been essentially sitting since '93. The guy who sold the car to me bought it from the original owners nephew. He had gone through the fuel system and got the car running again, but it needs some serious work still.

The turbo was not spooling up when I looked at the car, so that will be one of the first things on the list. Then there is what I believe to be possibly a period correct after-market inter-cooler in the back seat that I'd like to hook up again.

The engine sounded alright for only getting fuel to 3 cylinders, PO says its the fuel injector, since the problem migrated with the injector. And apparently there is an override for the cold start valve wired in, since it apparently floods the engine when warmed up?

SO I have plenty to start looking at, and regardless of which route I choose, it will be expensive and time consuming. I would like to run the boost a bit higher so a lot of refreshes are in order.

I've owned a 931 and a 924 before but I didn't work on either much, I've been mostly working with newer Bimmers for the past couple years, and felt it was time to get back into Porsche. I still have the Haynes from the last time I owned a 931, so I guess its time to dig it out again and start familiarizing myself with these engines again.

I only have this one crappy pic from the day I bought her. She's still at the sellers place, and I don't think I'll be able to go pick her up for a couple more weeks...

The hood was open, but when closed everything is nice and strait.

That has got to be the worst color scheme in automotive history. And who would track a vintage turbo of any kind?

I actually don't mind the colour scheme, but the Pasha interior isn't my thing. My last two 924s were brown so I think this is a step up lol.

Plus there are plenty of people tracking these cars, and I'd be swapping the turbo. I may be swapping the turbo regardless since the one in the car isn't spooling up. That, or refurbishing it. I still have many decisions to make, and still don't have a full grasp of what I'm in for yet. heh.

Grenadiers, I'll be sending you a pm, as a 5 lug set up is on my to do list. as is finding some 16" wheels. Did the basket-weaves come in 16"?

We all like it, we're just goofing around. Rastas being sarcastic.
Give the pasha some time, it will grow on you.
