car: '87 924s
engine; '83 944
temp gauge on dash always suspect, tended to read low, now inop.
When looking at sensors I see a difference between that listed for an '87 and those listed for an '83 2.5 from a 944.
What's the difference?
I'm not sure which part to go after for an accurate gauge reading.
The both "look" like this

Your engine is from an '84 944? Not sure on the differences, but, I'd go with the '87 924S part, to match the gauge. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

More likely a ground problem than the sender. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I will go after grounds for the gauges then, first. Is there a good electric diagram floating around, this is all I can find, I have the 944 Haynes but that doesn't do me much good for body stuff.

The main ground is up above, can't reach, spot under the windshield area, driver side. Looks like pop bottle tops upside down~! There are blade connections there, and they get corroded. If you remove the dash, much better access. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Yes, 2 different sensors. Early has 1 contact for the gauge needle and the base is small diameter (doesn't penetrate water jacket in block) . Late has 2 contacts, one for the needle, one for the idiot light? , base is bigger and it sticks into the water inside the block. _________________ Current project 1981 931

Early 944 sensor
924S Sensor with single blade
Late 944 sensor with two blades. One for temp other for idiot light
I hope that helps! _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Thanks for that!!
Pretty sure we've got the first one pictured: the "button" single contact style.
Probably should have the 924s style to match the gauge, that would be the first thing to do.
BTW the gauge is "working" comes off stone cold and get's to about 1/4 and stays so likely it's just the wrong sensor/gauge combo.
Looks like the middle one is rare, Pelican doesn't show it, cheapest I've found is $80, ouch.
Wonder if one made for the VDO (non oem, right?) is the same resistance?

I assumed they were interchangeable, nope. early 944 "button" style smaller, can't put the 924s sensor (nor presummably the later 944 double spade) into the early 944 block. will have to either re-thread the block or get a different gauge. I'm trying to figure out how the early 944 and '87 924s temp gauge compare, maybe (since I think each gauge is individually mounted?) I can swap out just the temp gauge? _________________ 87 924S project, '83 944 engine,

Ah, I thought they would be interchangeable too... I seldom come across a very early block so keeping track of everything is difficult. I have two "early" blocks, or at least what I consider them early since they have the 3-piece oprv and eccentric tensioner, but use the late temp sensor so I wasn't aware the size changed. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior
