Just curious what everyone is running for timing.
The hanes manual I have says -3 deg but the clymer book says 0 +/- 1 deg. Anyone have a tried and tested timing?
This is for a 1980 924. I realize there is some variation depending on year and euro/North America engines _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK

I believe the 3 ATDC is what the manual states with both vacuum advance and retard plugged in.
I run my carburated 924 at 15 BTDC (static)-- temporarily until EDIS-4 |

Early on when I first got the car I didn't know that the engine had been swapped. It wasn't till I got into the heart of engine tuning that I started noticing things where not quiet right with the layout that prompted me to look into the history of the engine code. Originally, the car was stated to have -10° BTDC and it will pass smog testing on this setting. However, since learning that in fact this car has a 1980 engine I begun starting to run it at -3°. The difference in the ignition systems is that the 1980 engine has a different distributor configuration. Yes they look the same, but they both get to the total timing just a little bit differently. The over all difference with the timing is that your basically changing the ignition point. If your in cruising mode on the high way stick to the stock timing as you will get the best fuel mileage too, but if your looking for something a bit more aggressive off the line you can advance the timing a little bit, however you will reduce your "at speed" power. If you get an MSD ignition, you would reap the best of both worlds, hence the invention of Multi-Spark Discharge.
Ultimately, to answer your question. I've found the best settings for me have been the factory settings for the 1980 engine at -3°. |
