Not necessary. The early 924 M/C and booster are sized appropriately together to work with the 5-lugs as-is. Converting the M/C and booster to the 944 unit is not necessary.
You could also go to the 931 M/C and booster, but you'll achieve a very similar effect with the 924 unit.

The difference between the 924 and 931 sets will be pedal travel. Effort should be similar as the bores of the M/C and booster sizes are paired up.
