Not sure where to start, so I guess the best way to start is to say that I am looking forward to sharing my restoration project as well as taping into the wealth of information this site has to offer.
About Me:
I am a boater, live in NY, Long Island specifically. Have always done all my own work on my boats and as a kid had muscle cars. I am 53 years young
And this 1980 924 turbo was the car my wife had when we dated. It took me a while to find one in decent condition, but did a few months ago. It is the same color as the one my wife had, two tone green. I bought it sight unseen, but did have lots of pictures and the gentleman I bought it from seemed sincere and very informative, in other words, all he told me, the good the bad was exactly what it was, no surprises.
The restoration of this car is not about doing this so I can flip the car, it is about bringing a car my wife loved back into her life. The car is a toy for her and will not be used as her primary source of transportation, just a fun ride to drive on nice days. I already understood before purchasing this car, all the bad reviews and the origins and shortcomings. So as mentioned, really did not care about that for the reasons stated above. I do expect to spend more to restore it than it would ever fetch if it was to be resold, get all that.
What I do love about the car is it's unique look and the fact in my neck of the woods, they don't exist.
About the car:
Exterior:
Well the body is in mint (diamond condition), original paint, two dings, and the paint shows better than my 2012 Lexus, simply blows my mind!!!
The rubber spoiler around the rear hatch, shows some pitting on close examination, but over all looks great! There is no signs of rust or rot on the car and the body looks like it has never been hit or bondo used.
Interior:
Pretty much shot
The dash is fine no cracks, the door panels are fine, the rear seat is fine, the carpet all needs to be replaced, assume either the hatch leaked, or the sunroof (musty smell). The front seats are shot. No radio, no speakers.
Motor and Tranny:
Motor runs fine, looks like the turbo was rebuilt and is fine, drives nice gets the boost. I put a used tranny in that I bought on EBAY, $400.00.The old tranny had a rattle, the previous owner did do some work on it and I kept it. I have a little problem now with the new used tranny, will post later about that. Motor seems to be fine, little oil leak from what appears to be from a big nut on the oil feed to the turbo by the rack an pinion boot on the passenger side. I do have an idle fluctuation problem, nothing major and again will post about that. Overall though, very happy how the motor runs. It has almost 100k on the motor. Oh, no smoke, clean exhaust.
Definitely have some electrical gremlins did read about the grounds.
I will post pictures, guess the best way is using photo bucket?
I wanted to introduce myself here, I am and have been very active on boater forums, so as a newbee to this forum, I figured this is the best way to introduce myself.
Thanks
Walter

Welcome. The car sounds better than most. I wouldn't consider the interior shot, an uncracked dash is rare. Carpet and seats are fairly easy to get, just not cheap. (IMHO). Photobucket is what I use too. let's see some pics! _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

Walt, welcome to 924board!
| walterv wrote: | | The rubber spoiler around the rear hatch, shows some pitting on close examination | Very common, not a huge deal, Mother's Back to Black works well on the spoiler.
| walterv wrote: | | the carpet all needs to be replaced, assume either the hatch leaked, or the sunroof (musty smell) | Check the battery tray very closely. Very important to identify where the water may be coming in. Also, by the fuel filler tube, there is a union there that will sometimes get clogged or disconnect, causing water to seep down into the rear passenger footwell.
| walterv wrote: | | I have a little problem now with the new used tranny, will post later about that. | Lemme guess, 1st and 2nd are bit crunchy and slow to shift.
| walterv wrote: | | Motor seems to be fine, little oil leak from what appears to be from a big nut on the oil feed to the turbo by the rack an pinion boot on the passenger side. | Suggest getting a turbo reseal kit, as the crush washers may be leaking oil. Proper torque and periodic retightening is really important to minimize leaks.
| walterv wrote: | | I do have an idle fluctuation problem, nothing major and again will post about that. | Almost certainly a vacuum leak. Check the flexible rubber boot at the throttle body, and all of the soft rubber elbows and hoses. The elbows in particular are susceptible to cracking, and often cannot be detected until you remove them and inspect the inside corners of the elbows.
Again, welcome to forum, really interested in seeing pix...that two tone green combo is one of my favs. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Redline MTL will help the transaxle, but they are just very slow shifting. Go slowly and plan your shafts accordingly. _________________ Stefan

Gees guys, totally appreciate the welcomes and advice. Really want to get my hands around this beast, hell of a lot less interpenetrating than my boat.
what is very cool, is this is my era , in other words , that vacuum stuff.
As mentioned, just a muscle car guy in my day, did not pay attention to that foreign crap
Playing a bit now with this car has me amazed on the quality of yesteryear. Just digging this experience. Really in the wow factor at this point,n but will say, a bit scary _________________ I am restoring a 1980 924 Turbo, my wife had one when we were married, promised her I would find one for her again one day. |
