If you think you've beaten your local roads already:
How about a run around Australia?
Over 34 years ago, back when our
beloved 924s were considered fresh,
two men in a Toofah went off to do so…
Repco 1979 Around Australia Reliability Trial 34 years ago
A bad idea?
Not when you've got a great team that's
dedicated too proof the toofah's sporty pedigree:
Jürgen Barth & Roland Kußmaul
were brought in by Porsche Cars Australia
to take the 924 for a spin around the continent.
They succeeded and finished!
Earlier that year they attended the 27th Safari Rally in a 924
Turbo (#20) but didn't complete the run deu to transmision issieus.
Downunder they choose the more relyable non aspirated car — #8 — .
There was very little information to be found online,
luckely that has changed over the years…
@Flikr: Porsche 924 Repco Rally Oran Pk 79
Overload of information over at repcoroundaustralia.blogspot.com
Synopsis on entrants number 8:
Quote: | The Barth/Kushmaul Porsche started cautiously (17th on the seeding stage),
but dropped time near Tarpeena before reaching Adelaide in 19th. A cracked
fuel line cost them time before Broken Hill but they climbed to 16th by Immarna.
They then lost time on the Nullarbor like so many others, placing 16th into Perth.
A good run through WA saw them climb to 10th by Darwin. The good run continued
through NT and Qld with them placing 7th at Townsville. They held this until a roll
near Bellingen which dropped them to 9th which they held through to the finish. |

That car's still in Audstralia as far as I know. It came over to do the Targa NZ a few years ago and I got to spend a day drooling over it. _________________ Andrew

Awesome! Thanks for that Andrew!
Knew she was supposed to be somewhere in Oz but wasn't aware she was
looking well nourished and up for the job of doin' the Targa in 2006!
With time the suspension came down a lot
Glad to see she's still capable of enjoing a Rally,
I guess she is in private hands then?
Did you notice the 931 head under the bonnet?
(~probably combined with flat-top pistons?)
Looks like there was an oil cooler setup up front?
I can guess why they moved the exhaust tip over to the other side
… but I don't see you guys do that on RHD cars. Odd?
Any thoughts?
That video is an absolute time capsule: Love the ambient!
Still have a lot more reading to do at the repcoroundaustralia.blogspot

Back then it was a lovely couple that owned it (haven't heard anything of it or them since though) and they were very aware and proud of the history of the car. From memory they said it was actually originally a 931 which had been converted to N/A because the homologation hadn't been sorted in time to use the turbo for the Repco rally. It could have just been for reliability though as mentioned in the article.
They were keeping it very original, and were quite annoyed that the Targa rules wouldn't allow them to run the original spotlights and bars, which they still had at the time.
I don't remember the exhaust, but in your photos it looks like it runs down the normal side and the crosses across the back where the spare tyre well usually is. I presume this is to keep the muffler up out of the way and allow for a bigger tank??
I'd love to know where the car is now. _________________ Andrew

Thanks for sharing Harm,
Brings back lots of memories, i was a young boy at the time and the wining cars were the brand new Holden VB Commodore. These cars looked so modern compared to the model (kingswood) they replaced. I begged Mum & Dad to buy one, but they settled on a smaller model the Torana.
Of course the winning driver was my child hood hero, the late great Peter Brock.
Good to see that ANK-727 had the same single prop 'bent' bonnet (hood) as my Toofah when its open....which is most of the time _________________ 1978 924 RoW 5-Speed (Current Project)
