Big thanks to Dan Beckett (aka Ideola) and other P-car-nut friends for helping me push my '82 931 back in the garage today for eventual install of it's freshly-rebuilt engine. Saga started a good 4 years ago when I noticed a nice rod knock after arriving at work one morning.
Snapped rod bolt and 4 years later, the car is back in the garage and thawing out after countless nights out in the cold, rain, snow, and assorted misery of 4 years of neglect in Michigan.
Will take a couple of days to clean up messy stuff and old wiring, then the engine goes back in and we start thinking about re-firing her.
Maybe by March/April, I'll have something fun to drive to work instead of my minivan...
Didn't quite realize how much I've missed her 'till we pulled her inside, and I started to get excited about putting that shiny new engine back under the hood... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Motor's in today, and making excellent oil pressure on the starter only - 6 bars! Still gotta hook up all the exhaust, coolant, fuel and remaining electrical, but she seems ready to go, not complaining too much.

Engine bay sure looks clean without all that G-D fuel and emissions plumbing... sure will be nice once the intercooler and Megasquirt are in! But I'll enjoy it stock for a while first... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Mixed results... is running though sluggishly... but main issue so far is peeing coolant out the back... thinking/expecting/hoping it's just the heater core hoses or the flange at the back of the head... though where it's coming off the block is unexpected, seems almost to be above the oil filter housing. Wierd. Unless I suppose there's any water exchange in there, and so leaking there instead... or as well...
Will attack when it's cooled off again and my motivation has revved back up. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Freeze plug??? There is one on the back of the engine below the head which would be hidden by the heater core hoses. There are also freeze plugs near the oil filter housing.....

No, doesn't look to be a freeze plug; I'm suspecting/hoping that I left something loose back there after cleaning, like perhaps the thermo-time switch or temp sender, didn't get all tight after reassembly... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Correction: Chuck wins the prize. With added pressure from the coolant system pressure tester, I can see the freeze plug right over the oil filter housing is piddling out a stream. Argh. Step 1, push it in harder, see where that gets us... maybe some Hondabond too... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Possible suggestion; try using a nail counter sink tool and hammer to peen around the lip of the freeze plug at an angle towards the block.
If you can clean it up real good, Use some JB Weld rather than Hondabond. JB Weld is more likely to withstand pressure.

Cheers... main priority at this point is to just get it to seal well enough to drive outside without massive fluid loss, then park for the winter. Need to get it out of the garage, and am out of time (and energy! Been working at this reinstall all week!) to mess with it.
Will probably have to pull the turbo back out in the spring and go over them more seriously, maybe replace too, but for now this should do...
Spring will be a fine time to also pull and properly clean the crossmember and a-arms, which are in great need after all that time of oil leaks and bunk build-up...
Then to get to the impressive coolant leak on my van... whee. I hate working on street cars... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yeah, that plug over the oil filter mount refuses to seal - but I'll tackle in in the spring. At least she was able to be driven out to her winter parking spot! Running adequately, but will need more attention once she's not peeing, to get the settings dialed in and the engine broken in... _________________ Vaughan Scott

PS - Chuck, what do you usually use to seal those plugs? I was told Hylomar, the blue stuff, but this is now the second time I've had a problem with one not sealing. Surely I must be doing something wrong??? _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hmm, I don't know if my machinist uses anything. I always have him replace the freeze plugs with new metric plugs. I'll ask him when I pick up my replacement block in a week or so.
Sorry for your loss.....of fluid.

Using a factory piece? A buddy of mine fought this issue on a 951 with aftermarket plugs. _________________ Toofah King Bad
