| I just put the car back together after doing a head gasket. I didn't lose anything or have extra parts, and I followed all the steps in Haynes to the T. I know the engine is getting fuel, because I hadn't tightened the injectors enough ( I was afraid of breaking another bolt) and it soaked the engine bay. I cleaned all that up, and tried starting her again. She turns over, but the car will not start. Could this be a timing problem? Any good resources for troubleshooting? Thanks guys. |

Most likely an ignition / timing issue. First of all, make sure you cam sprocket is on correctly. Deep side with VW/Audi logo should be facing the windshield, and you should be using the dimple on that side of it to line up with the pointer on the cam cover.
Next, follow the instructions listed in this thread to make sure your ignition wires are installed correctly, and that you have the ignition distributor indexed properly:

| Thank you! When disassembling I made sure everything was labeled and reassembled properly. I was very meticulous, doesn't mean the PO had everything right tho. I was going to go over the engine bay again later today to double check, and this link will help a lot. |
