Gave this a read: http://garage.ideola.com/downloads/G31-Trans-Updated-20100207.pdf

From what I read and made sense from that, I should be able to swap the transmission from the car posted below without needing a new torque tube, let me know if I'm wrong so far.
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/4135083621.html

For the swap, is it correct to assume that all I would need would be the transmission, shift linkages and transmission mounts?

If not, what else is needed?

Dude, I'd swap your car for that one. It already has the 944 style brakes, a complete sunroof that could likely be serviced, etc

If it is a NA and a 80, then yes it should swap over with those parts you listed.

The brakes and wheels would be a worthwhile upgrade and I suspect you may want to scab any sunroof parts from them as well.

The leak is probably either/or a plugged drain or a failed battery box.

Hmm, it's an idea for sure.

Problem is I still have to sell the jetta, and the green '78 is pretty hard to sell because... because it's green...

Could sell the jetta and buy the white one but then I have two 924's and I can't do that.

I'll see how she goes. Emailed the guy and he hasn't got back to me in a while.

So to mount the transmission to the car it would require no modifications to the mounting brackets?

it would be a complete bolt in swap nothing needed but transmission and shift linkage

i would also suggest using the white one as your driver, and selling or parting out the green one.

It's tempting. I'll have to see how the white one looks. For 800 bucks the engine might not be as reliable as my current engine is.

I emailed him and he says he wants 300 for the transmission. Is that a good deal?

well 800 is a pretty good price for a running 924, so if you can afford that i would go for it.
if i was looking for a transmission i probably wouldnt want to pay more than 100-150$ for it

Yep, sell the Jetta before it becomes a money pit. Buy white toofah and enjoy a car with all of the subtle improvements made to the cars since 78, including better brakes.

Part out the green car, make a little money back and use it's block as a basis for your "monster" motor and spares for your white one. Sell the chassis to a local salvage yard.

+100^^^

I like the color scheme of your green car, and I know the emotional attachment that comes with your first toofah...took me 9 years to finally agree it was time for SONIC to go...but the white car in that ad appears to be a really good starting point (as long as it is cancer-free...I hate rust repair!).

Have a guy coming to check out the jetta today, and somebody coming to see the 924 on Saturday. So ad long SD the white one is cancer free, buy that and make a huge profit with the sale of the other two (toofah listed for $1800 and jetta for 2 grand)

That's note money to put into the build!

What year did Porsche start galvanizing their bodies?

Um, no offense, but $1800 for your 924 is too much. I'd probably pay around 500 for your car since it is an early with a bad sunroof, bad paint and no performance parts to speak of. The new HG is nice, but that makes me, as a buyer, think about what else will be needed in short order.

Khal's 78 went for $1500 and it is much nicer condition inside/out than yours.

Sorry, but I believe that's the reality young man.

This is why I suggested breaking it up to get the bits you'll need to improve/fix/keep up the white one and sell the body on to the local salvage yard. Its a good excersize to learn the cars without worrying about having to put it together later, etc.

I believe the 924 was half-galvanized until 79, when they did the full galvanization. Still didn't solve the battery tray problems, which continued through the 968 (my 951 has it and I've fixed it for now, but I'll get to sort it out fully in the not to distant future), so don't write it off for that. Just fix any rust quickly, coat the tray with fresh paint and then maybe bedliner coating. Some have relocated the battery to another location (like the rear) and properly vented/drained to alleviate that from happening again.

Correct, but your opinion is that of somebody who knows these cars well and what they're worth.

If somebody else is willing to pay 1800 for it then let them pay 1800 for it
