| Without trying to start up a gigantic thread about oil, I have a simple question in regards to which is the best or preferred type to use in my 924S. 10w30/40 or 20w50? The PO alluded to 20w50 being better to use in this car than 10w30, which doesn't entirely make sense to me. Any truth to that? I'd like to use high mileage oil in the 'ol girl until I rebuild the engine, but that's only available in 10w. Thoughts? |

I run 5w40 LiquiMoly in my 2.5 race car. FWIW, Porsche now recommends 0w40 Synth for "all sports cars."

20W is pretty thick...unless you plan on using this car in the summer i'd say 20W is too thick. As far as i know 20W will probably cause very high oil pressures in the winter with the cold engine....high pressure does not necesarilly mean a good thing. Pressure can be the indicator of lack of flow...you get my drift. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I run 20w50 Brad Penn in both the race car and the turbo. BUT I don't run the cars in the winter.
There's a scale in the owner's manual that says what viscosity to use given the expected ambient temp range. I imagine Porsche's "all sports cars" comment probably means *current* vehicles, not the ancient pieces we drive. |

I would DEFINITELY not run 0W anything in any of our cars. Not even on the racetrack.
Yes, new cars use it. They're designed for it. Under some circumstances.
Rasta, I hope you're logging data on your oil pressure...
We use 20W50 or 40wt Valvoline VR1 race oil in the #77. In my turbo, it's been Mobil 1 10W30... though with a fresh engine on the ramps, I'll probably be breaking 'er in with the Brad Penn stuff.
cjbear, I'd say you should be fine with 10W30 or 40... what's your oil pressure doing? One good thing is with the 2.5L you do have the oil cooler, so it's less likely to need a 20W50 on the street, even in the summer... _________________ Vaughan Scott

When we had our '87 924S I ran 0W40 Mobil 1 in it with good results...i.e. no problems or leakage and proper oil pressure. I also run it in the '92 and '95 BMW's as well as the MINI. I would run it in the 635, but I would want to get that engine "sealed up" first .
Remember that, in simple terms, multi viscosity oils "act" like a certain weight at a certain temperature meaning the colder the temperature the lower the weight and vice-versa as opposed to the old single weight Dino oils which don't have that characteristic. _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Switched Shaggy and the race car from Penn 20w50 to LiquiMoly 5w40. There had been no change in oil pressure and I would say Shaggy revs a little freer and his girl efficiency is up. _________________ Toofah King Bad

That's an interesting data point. What was the girl efficiency before and after the change in weight? More importantly, how does one calculate that?
I run 20w50 in the 924, but my oil pressure gauge isn't working still, though the idiot light does, so that's a little comforting. Really need to fix that in the off season.
The 951 needs an oil change and will probably run 10w30 this winter since it will be parked outside and I have to drive early in the morning. _________________ Stefan

LOL... hard to remember, it's been 4 years since that ran; snapped a rod bolt. Hoping to finally have the engine back in by the end of the month. But I seem to recall around 1-1.5bar hot idle, enough to keep the light off, bone stock (no boost increase or anything), maybe 150kmi. Bearings were good on disassembly except for the obviously busted one.
Of course, the 931 does benefit from the oil cooler stock. A 2.0L NA would be sucking wind.
Then again, you don't wanna know what the race motor runs... but it's a special case.  _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have used 20w50 almost exclusively in my 924S. I tried 10w30/40 a couple times but didn't like the oil pressure. I run my car from after the April rains until late fall and have never had any problems. My car only has 53k on it so maybe it is tighter than most. I don't know, but 20w50 is the best for me. _________________ Matt

| Thanks for the replies. Sounds like oil types are all over the board. I went ahead and put in the 10w30 high mileage. My oil pressure before the change was right in the middle of the gauge at idle, and around 4-5 at speed. No difference, or very little difference anyway, in pressure with the 10w30. It seems to run a bit smoother with this oil actually. |

I now run 20W50 Brad Penn in all of my cars. I rarely drive them now in the winters, but when I did, I would switch over to 10W40 Castrol (one of the few fully synthetic oils available off-the-shelf). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I run 20w50 in both the 924 and the 951, but I do live in Arizona.
