In two weeks I will be driving my 32 year old sportscar with an unknown mechanical history 203 miles one way. The longest trip it has made since I have owned it is 76 miles and it did fine then. I think I might be crazy doing this especially considering what I plan on doing when I get there.

As long as you wear dark sunglasses all the time, you'll be fine _________________ Stefan

Your car should do fine. When I took my 924 from Ottawa to Watkins Glen NY. Drove it hard on the race track for 2.5 hours and then drove it back. It didn't give me a problem. Just make sure to check all the bolts and torque things down. You should be good to go. Good luck and let us know how it goes. _________________ Cheers;

I always check the water hooses before going on a longer trip. Check under the car for oil leaks, check electrics, check brake pads visually fill up and drive !
While driving, i never exagerate with keeping it at high RPMs and try to drive it in its sweet spot.
Just drove about 150Km today with mine. Aldough not as quiet as modern cars, they are quite confy and relaxing to drive.
Sometimes i drive my 924 in holidays for 3-4000Kms in a week or two. It always did just perfect.
Enjoy your trip. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

The only thing that really worries me is the clutch. I won't have time to change it before I go and I have no idea if it has ever been changed. It seems to be working fine but still a little worried.

I was crazier than you. I drove my 924 1000 miles home just after I bought her. Adelaide->Melbourne->Gippsland->Sydney.
I did, however, spring for roadside assistance and drove 'the long way around' where there would be plenty of towns.

No slippage. But there are other ways a clutch can fail.

did similar nearly 2000 miles, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Townsville when I bought her. Had no vacuum advance, blew a heater hose at Byron bay and a rad fan at Rockhampton. Fixed most on the roadside except the hose. Had to be towed into Byron Bay where I bypassed the heater and refilled. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

I think I would do a 30-60 mile trip first, the week before, you never know. Then make sure you gave a grab bag of tools and a working jack.
I did that with my first 300 mile round trip in my 911. All was good only to get a snag where my starter solenoid decided to not cooperate (when I got to the job site). Jack and a screwdriver on that solenoid later that afternoon after work and I made it home/not turning it off... You never know whats lurking with any old car unless you go through the parts mounted to the main mechanical parts / engine and trans.

I seocnd Ken's suggestion. Take it for a shorter run before the big tirp. Then recheck all the bits to make sure nothing came loose. You should be good to go after that.

I plan on driving the hell out of it so if it's going break it will do it next weekend. I'm going to buy a spare timing belt, change the plugs, flush the radiator, change the radiator cap, change the front brake pads and generally inspect everything else. I would also like to install that sway bar I bought from Ken several months ago.
