|
|
I have in my possession a 1982 S2 931 which according to the VIN that starts with WP0ZZZ is a ROW (non-US) car. Even before I looked at the VIN I thought that it pulled stronger than other 931s I drove stateside. The car does have the ugly reflectors on the sides and US spec bumpers. When I was figuring out my fuel pump wiring I was having a serious WTF moment because the wiring and the relay didn't seem to match the manual. It might actually be a FrankenPorsche, as in a ROW car that got converted to US spec somehow.
I would like to identify the engine, turbo and DITC, any pointers to numbers to look for would be appreciated. |

I didn't know they made them that way. I seem to vaguely remember that US import laws were different in the 70s or 80s. Diplomats and other folks who were stationed in Europe could buy cars in there and bring them to the US upon return. May be it was one of those cars? In any event, I should post the numbers from Engine, Turbo and DITC. |

Post the entire VIN or use our own 924 VIN Decoder and see what it says.
http://www.924board.org/register/vindec.html
VIN
ZZZ indicates that the chassis is ROW...unless the VIN tags were swapped. Have you identified all of the VIN plates (windshield, door jamb, battery box)??? It's possible it's a federalized ROW car, but there are some strange things about what you're describing that don't make sense.
If it is an 82 931, the string after the ZZZ should be 93ZCN1. For example, my 81 Euro is 93ZBN1, and my CGT is 93ZBN7. My 81 NA was 92ZBN4. Note the "B" in all three cases indicates the model year 81; so yours should have a "C" if its really an 82.
Fuel Pump Relay Wiring
The fact that the FPR wiring doesn't match the manual may not be conclusive of anything. If it is a late serial number in the 82 model year, it is possible that the factory wiring is different than what is in Haynes (do you have the most recent edition with the late model supplement???? Have you compared wiring to the FSM????). Which HVAC setup does the car have (early 924 or early 944???).
Engine Code
The engine code should be 31.0X.XXXX; 31 designates it as a 931 motor; the middle two digits designate the type and market; and the last four digits are the engine serial number, which should match the chassis number. Consequently, 31.01 is S1 ROW; 31.02 is S1 NAm; 31.03 is S2 ROW; 31.04 is S2 NAm; 31.50 is GT. If your car started life as a ROW car, then it should have 31.03 engine code, with the last four digits matching the last four digits of the VIN. If the last four don't match, then the block must have been swapped in at some point.
Even so, bear in mind that the blocks for these cars are fully interchangeable, so the engine code may be meaningless, particularly if its serial number doesn't match the chassis number. For example, the block in the 941 is 31.04, but the 941 started life as a S1 931. Obviously, the engine had been swapped out at some point before I acquired it.
Trans
I find it really strange that a ROW would have the Audi based trans in it. According to the tech specs booklet, there were NO rest of world cars that got the Audi trans. I wouldn't think that switching over to the Audi trans is something that would be required for federalization (my 81 Euro was federalized but has its number-matching G31). It would not be any easy swap because the torsion carrier, torque tube, and shifting mechanism would all have to be changed. I suppose its possible there was an overzealous inspector who required the change due to the more economical gearing in the Audi trans.
Turbocharger
Regarding the turbo, we are unfortunately missing information on the K26 data that came with the M31.03 engines. It would be interesting for you to post back the numbers on the blue/red tag on the turbocharger. The tag should have the K26 specs and part number, along with a serial number. For example, an M31.04 K26 would look something like this:
K26-2660 GA 4.10
5326 970 6020 (or 6022)
Even if your numbers don't match the above, it would be good to update the K26 info thread with what you find.
DITC
As for the DITC, here are the Siemens part numbers you'll want to look for imprinted on the case:
North America / Japan: 5WK 1665
ROW: 5WK 1664
Sweden, Australia, Hong Kong: 5WK 1686
Carrera GT: 5WK 1666 _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I can't agree with that engine S/N matched to VIN...
mine:
WP0ZZZ93ZCN100516 and Engine S/N was 31032150 - according to Porsche details about car... and it's almost impossible someone change cylinder block and records in Porsche service history as well.
I got also strange gearbox S/N 0105413V - with G3101 type
And I never heard about Euro 931 with Audi gearbox _________________ 931 82' - 5000km after full engine rebuild
SOLD: 924 81' N/A- with turbo gearbox "dogleg" - great but mysterious car

It turns out the darn thing has 2 VINS, one on the body and another one on the sticker. t's an artifact of how Porsche built them. The VIN on the body has WP0ZZZ and the VIN on the sticker and plate behind the windshield has WP0A. It's a US spec car after all. |

I know this is an old post but for future reference, there is only one vin. The "zzz" number by the battery box is the chassis number. The only difference between the two (us cars) are the "AAA" and "ZZZ". |

The one by the battery is a chassis number, not a vin. |
