i bought a 78 924 last night n/a ,didn't really look at it before purchase, but had a quick scout around it last night, and to my surprise there's a dog leg box in it.
can any one explain that ? as far as i am aware only the turbos got those boxes, i wonder if a previous owner changed it. |

| 78 came with a four speed. The dogleg was in the 79. Someone could have swapped it in. |

79 cars was in most cases made in 78... but for sure you have to check VIN in car to know what is correct year (if someone didn't change it already). If your dogleg is still in good condition (no griding when changing gears between 1-2-3) than better change oil firs for some good modern one. One thing to remember... don't shift too fast If you shift slowly that gearbox can be good almost forever They don't like fast shifting ... maybe sometimes _________________ 931 82' - 5000km after full engine rebuild

Despite what that report says, I am fairly certain that the only MODEL YEAR of the normally aspirated car that got the snailshell was 1979. It is most likely that the manufacture date of the car you have was in 1978, but the model year is actually 1979. The best way to tell is to check the VIN using our VIN decoder, as McGyver suggested.
The snailshell in the NA cars (aka 016Y/016Z) isn't the same as the one in the turbo cars (aka G31). The highlights are: smaller input shaft, smaller driveshaft in the torque tube, replaceable first and reverse with a different shaft arrangement (G31 has non-replaceable gears on the 1st/rev gear shaft, and it is oriented differently to the input shaft). Also, the gearing would be different in the NA snailshell, and also different between the US and Euro versions, as Pete's article documents. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks ideola, the date of registration for this car in Ireland is 3rd may 1978
and as i said there is no sign of the car being tampered with, but i will post the chassis no and see what it shows |

The 5 speed box was a cost option on the 1978 MY cars (available from September 1977), so your car is correct. _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic

Excellent scm924s thats very good news was starting to think one of the porsche production engineers was having a laugh.
Still doesn't make much sense though ,you would have thought they may added it to a limited edition special.
Any idea how many of the early N/A came with the dog leg,i've had about 9 or 10 of the pre 80 924 and they either have the 4 or 5 speed Audi box. |

I don't think it lasted long, the Audi based 5 speed came in for the '80MY. _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic

Hmmm.... news to me. Not that its not true, but I never heard this in 25 years of 924 ownership. 016 is a n/a 79 MY only according to spec book.
What's the VIN? |

Can't claim that sort of background knowledge, my information is drawn from two of the respected source books on the 924, both have the same comments on the introduction of the 5 speed boxes. _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic
