Been working on putting a 1.8t (aeb code as the only one with the oil pump at the rear) in a 924 na, it requires lots of fabrication.
it uses a 944 s2 gearbox and torque tube, a ford clutch disc and a mk4 golf gti solid flywheel.
Bottom end in, this is just a get me going engine, if it all works ok a decent tuned engine will be fitted. it mounts at the original mounting points
oil pan is made from a mk1 golf, needs to be deeper at the back etc
starter is fitted upsidedown for clearance, the transmission tunnel still needs a bit of chopping.
next issue is the inlet (from a mk4 golf) needs abit of adjustment to clear the servo _________________ Porsche 924 na

The intake from a B5 passat/A4 might be a bolt-in fit, since they are mounted longitudinal and have to clear the similar brake booster.

I'm not trying to start a fight but I think it might be possible to use one of the versions that has the front oil pump that is belt driven and possibly use a custom pickup tube. I'm just bouncing ideas around because I'm interested in doing the same swap. AEB 1.8 are the hardest version to come by around here. _________________ 81 924 N/A

If it works it would give you a better selections of engines, (golf one has a forged crank) just make sure it has a pilot bearing as some don't, most of the "other 1.8t's" seem to have a chain driven oil pump siiting right at the front of the engine. On mine the bottom of the block is close to the crossmember and there is about 1 to 2 inch clearance with the bonnet.
The hardest part of mine is the inlet, i've had to shorten a golf one and now the throttle body needs a bit of work to fit.
Here's whats been needed to fit so far:
custom engine mounts
modified sump
think it was a lightly modded audi 80 diesel oil pickup
modified mk1 golf gti windage tray
reshaped transmission tunnel
custom starter mounts (needs to be upside down very simple)
mk4 golf belhousing and adapter plate and dust sheild (the passat one might of been a better choice??)
modified rear coolant mount
remote oil filter
heavily modified mk4 golf inlet
custom water pipes
None of this was difficult (inlet aside), keeps me busy
still a few more bits to do _________________ Porsche 924 na

Forgot to mention FJ40JIM Itried the passat one a while ago but it hit the brake master cylinder, shame as its a much better casting than the golf one. _________________ Porsche 924 na

Did it hit the booster or the master cylinder itself? If it is the booster maybe a BMW one would work _________________ 81 924 N/A

The standard inlet hits both booster and brake cylinder, the passat one has the throttle body right where the brake cylinder would be so a golf one chopped up does the trick.
A little more done
Had to move the turbo outlet as it points at the frame rail initially. _________________ Porsche 924 na

Cool, glad to see this prodject is still moving forward. For anyone wondering why he would be putting a tiny little 1.8 motor in place of the stock 2.0, well I have one in my 2003 Passat and if you didn't know what engine was under the hood and after taking a test drive you would think it was a 2.5 because it pulls right away with zero turbo lag and with 5 valves per cylinder the rpm's just keep on climbing. Really an amazing engine! Keep up the good work! _________________ 1980 924 N.A. Monaco Blue owned since 1987

I love these little 1.8t's this one will only be a moderate tune of around the 300 bhp mark which is easy to acheive with these little motors (decent turbo etc once its up and running). _________________ Porsche 924 na
