Hi All,
I have decided to fix my 1980 924 Turbo from Fairbanks AK. I am sure the rings are bad so I will also replace the rod bearings at the same time. Tha Hanes manual says to replace the rod bearing bolts every time? Is this really necessary? With alot of ring failure in these cars is every one replacing there rod bolts? I have the engine out on a stand getting ready to tear her down, what other mods are recomended? Is there any way to simplify the workings of this motor removing unnecessary emissions controls?
Any help will be appreciated!!

My most hated question on a Porsche tech board:
"Is it really necessary to do what the Porsche Factory Service Manual says? It seems too expensive/too troublesome."
A search will tell you that at least one motor has been lost from rod bolt failure. With the severely limited supply of bearings for these engines, it would be wasteful to go to all that trouble and skip a couple hundred bucks in fasteners, IMO. _________________ Toofah King Bad

If you can find the pistons, install the 81-82 pistons to raise the compression ratio.
Install the ROW waste gate spring.
Think about an adjustable cam gear (VW part).
If you do this, you will need to use premium gas instead of regular.
Leave the emission controls intact, not much to gain compared to the above. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

From my searches the rod blots are more rare than the bearings? What am I missing! Does everyone change out the bolts or not when they fix there top ring?
Please
Your help is appreciated. _________________ Captbadjim |

Rasta is right. It's a huge risk re-using rod bolts as they're one of the most highly stressed components in the whole engine.
The problem is that they're no longer available from Porsche. Someone may have new old stock somewhere but finding it is the problem.
Otherwise, Ideola has organised a number of group-buys for ARP replacement con-rod bolts. These are a special order item and are stronger than the originals.
A minimum of 5 sets need to be bought from ARP and 10 sets brings the price down significantly.
Best thing to do would be to PM/email Ideola and ask, although at the moment he's not answering PM's, maybe because of travelling/work. _________________ 1979 UK 932 |

I am self-funding a new round of production on these bolts. See details here: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=41557 _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
