We all know how much a set of coil overs are but would you really see the benifits if you weren't on a track all day long? Obviously the coil overs give you quick height adjustment to suit your mood so I thought i'd make my own.
First step is the strip you suspension leg and grind off your bottom spring platform. I got my 2 1/4" coil over kit from Ebay, origionally for a Mk2 Ford Escort. Slide them over your leg and get some one with good welding skills to Tig these in place being carefull not to damage the threads.
Then select your shock of choice, depending on budget. Slip it in, grease the thread and put your 2 locking ring on making sure to put the one with the spring platform seating ring on top and your shock retaing nut. These shocks are shortened/uprated VW Golf MK1 items.
Next choose your spring lentgh and rating. Origional 924 length is 14" with a 175lbs spring rate ( I think! ) and stick your top cap on. I had to drill out the Escort one to fit over the shock absorber shaft make sure you only drill it out just enough to slide over the threaded part so it sits snug on the little shoulder on the shock. A great looking coil over shock that if you shop around can be made for around £100 ( for a pair)
The thing is..........I didn't want to use solid strut mounts for driving round the roads. I wanted to use the factory mounts to give a smoother ride. I would of had to machine the mounts or space the top cap of the coil over to fit, neither of which I thought was ideal. I wanted to use the standard coil top hat and 944 S2 strut mounts, this meant getting custom springs made.
As you can see they are "pig tailed springs". The top being the same size and shape as the factory spring, the bottom a flat 2 1/4" to sit on the adjustable platform. The cost, a very reasonable £120. I chose a length of 12" and a 200lb rating. Here they are assembled and mounted on the car.

Nice work !!
Here is my attempt, El cheapo kit from rallydesign.co.uk. Together with stock top mount and "race spring size", think they are 350lb springs.

If you want to do this yourself, do it. However, since the cost of front struts lie in the inserts themselves, the rest should be done economically as possible. With that in mind, buying an aftermarket kit, like this one from Paragon Products makes sense.

just a note, the paragon kits have an aluminium lower sleeve, so no welding required.
