I need to buy new tires and plan on keeping stock base 14" wheels.
Stock tire size is 185/70R14
I'm wondering if it would make sense to go with 195/65R14 for additionnal contact patch
I see from tirerack that this would narrow down a lot my choice of tire

What do you guys think?

PS: Ideally if Ken can find his fourth SE wheel I would move up to 15inches and have more choice buthe's been searching for almost a year now

worth considering if increased sidewall roll would negate any advantages of a larger contact patch? I am not sure because I have never looked into it. I am not even sure of the exact rim width or offset. I am guessing width is something like 5.5-6.0". At that width you could probably even go for a 205/60/r14 as they can usually fit down to that, however if you did I would be almost certain sidewall roll would negate contact patch improvements at that size. Offset is a consideration the bigger you go also. You also may not care too much about all that because fat wheels just look better. Interesting... getting my car close to on the road and probably in need of new shoes, I am interested to hear the thoughts on this.

I have some 195/60 on my stock wheels. Handles just fine, 1/2 inch shorter than stock(roughly) Throws speedo off by about 2 mph at speed.

I see 195/60 has more selection of high performance tires like Falken Azenis RT615K

the 2.5mph difference might be good, if I simply match my speedometer to speed limit i'll always be 2.5 mpg slower.

I have Falkens, don't remember the model. Decent tires...

We ran Falken 615K's on our 1978NA for Chumpcar endurance races. They were 195/60/14.

Car ran great with them, although we didn't pay much attention to what the speedometer was telling us.

I ran yokohama AVS ES100 205/60R14 on the 14x6 stock rims on my '79 sebring. I dont recall a lot of sidewall roll but if I really leaned hard on them during a lower speed tight corner it did seem to roll, but I also think I was probably asking to much of any tire in that situation.

the 205's and no power steering made parking lots a good work out
