Tomorrow I will begin tearing the engine apart again to fit the "speed" parts. As the heads were bought used I ended up replacing two valve guides and adjusting the valve seat angles just a bit. The contact band on the exhaust valves was a little wide and on correcting it I also opened up the seats slightly for better flow.

The heads not only have bigger valves, but 3 springs per valve to handle the camshaft. I will be running 1.6 roller rockers instead of 1.5 and teflon valve stem seals.

Camshaft is a custom grind somewhat similar to a c503. the idle will be rough but I wont know just how rough till its running.

Coming together slowly but surely. Heads and camshaft installed today. I was very glad that I opened up the grille area when it came to swapping cams with the engine in the car. Not possible any other way.

Wow... you made made a huge job seem easy! I used the same bell housing you have there. You can find them specifically in the 97 chev trucks for anyone looking for do do the same.

Like V8 had mentioned I have had some drive train issues with the stock 924 parts. Still too busy with school (and too poor) to tackle what the issue is. I don't really care at this point. My plan remains to swap out the rest of the porsche drive train and go with a tremec 5 speed tranny and corvette rear independent rear end. I plan to be able to cruise down the highway at 1500 rpm instead of 3000.

I can't believe you still want more power....I find mine is stupid fast!

I have been thinking along the same lines on the transmission. While the car sounds good screaming down the road it would be nice to cruise at much lower rpm, lower than even the highest geared 944 tranny.

I am still trying to figure out why I am increasing the horsepower... when hitting a tarstrip at 60mph caused traction problems accelerating before any mods were made. I guess I just want to see what it will do.

Hopefully I will have it finished tonight after work.

All I can say is, wow. This thing runs like the hounds of hell. I have not yet installed the big throttle body because I dont have an intake boot big enough to fit it. The computer needs to be reprogrammed to my setup, and the engine tries to die at idle alot when cold. However, it is not the same car it was 3 days ago. Not even close.

I will try to get a video clip posted.

I really need to get this thing reprogrammed. The computer does not know what to think of the cam, and the car is always trying to die when you come to a stop. Even though it is running hog rich it is still more responsive on the road than it was before.

Audio is awful since it is a tiny cell phone speaker but you can hear the "lope" of the cam.

Been weighing my options on tuning the car. I can get a mail order tune, a dyno tune or tune it myself with the proper software. I have been leaning toward buying the software and the cable and tuning it myself. The mail order tune might be close, and the tyno tune may get it 90 percent, but I want the most fuel economy and power and I will only get that with real world tuning. It seems that there is a never ending river of things to learn before the car is how I want it.

well done so far,
suggest dyno and software for the fine tuning (cold starts and cruise settings etc...
you also get the advantage of knock detection and torque readouts with the dyno time.

I decided to get it tuned by a guy in Ohio who is apparently pretty gifted with tuning the LT1 specifically. He has been doing it for some time and has even tuned 944 hybrid projects before. I nearly decided to tune it myself, but I dont really have the time right now to learn a whole other ball game just to be driving the car. Maybe later.

I have been reading dyno sheets lately and have found some impressive figures for no more modification than is done. This guy is pushing 370 rwhp with stock heads and a 503 cam! That is insane for just a camshaft.
http://ls1tech.com/forums/lt1-lt4-modifications/1084506-new-dyno-track-times-cc503.html

Thought I would post some recent pictures of the car. All of my effort has been on the engine so far, and not the body. I do have some fiberglass parts and plan to get more. I want it wider, but I want it to look like a carrera when I am done, not some ricer nightmare. i am thinking either a GTR bodykit or running +2'' widebody fenders in the front and widening the existing GT flares another 2-3" each with some good ol hand laid fiberglass.

Finally got the car back on the road with the retuned computer yesterday. Too early to tell much but it is faster, especially in the low end. My rear tires are just a little too wide for my carrera flares so they scrub if I hit a big bump, and I found out yesterday that when I accelerate the car rocks back so hard that they scrub then too. I am really going to have to widen the flares.

Also the engine idle is much smoother, and there is no cackle on trailing throttle. I think one of my o2s is lazy so I have been running on speed density mode. More crap to buy.

I have not tried a zero to sixty time yet because im chicken, but i did record a 60 to 80mph time of 2.7 seconds! That was only in 4th gear. I think the biggest difference I have noticed since the retune was the low-end power. For instance, passing another car starting out at 55mph you dont have to downshift to feel hard acceleration. I constantly find myself driving through town doing 30 to 35mph in 5th gear with no feeling I cant speed up without a downshift. It is really a trip for a die hard 4cyl guy.

I have been doing alot of thinking on widening the car more. I have some BBS style 3peice wheels I can get 12" wide with assorted rim barrels, but unfortunately they are 15" diameter.

New video of the car re-tuned.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCxIGRN96i0&feature=youtu.be

I deliberately engine braked mid 2nd gear to show off the trailing throttle bark. The computer is tuned for a full engine brake on trailing throttle. Only gentile acceleration here.

GTS headlights are under construction from pointers found on this forum. Pictures soon to follow.
