Nice. What bell housing is that? And forgive me if I missed it, but is that a cast iron motor?

The block is. The rest is aluminum. This particular engine weighs about 150 lbs more than than the 944 engine it is replacing. (Edit: I later found that the LT1 engine weighed only 50 lbs than the 924s engine. The particulars of the weights are listed on page 9) Not really a huge issue since I can remove more than that amount with complete AC delete, FG hood, fenders, header, CGT FG nose, and pop-up headlight delete.

It is a K series truck bellhousing, from the late 80s I think. It originally mated a Muncie 4 spd (sm465) to a 454. Plenty of room in there for a bigger clutch.

Adapter plate so far. It is waiting on the bearing retainer/throwout carrier.

Unfortunately the engine would already be bolted in the car if it were not for two parts. One of them came today. The other, the pilot adapter bushing is the last hurdle. I can buy one from texasperformanceconcepts.com, but they say you have to wait for 3 to 4 weeks. Since I dont have a lathe I am going to either try to spin one out at the local college or pay a machinist to make one.

Not paying 85 bucks for a few oz of steel and waiting a month for it.

Bearing retainer. I ordered it monday morning and had it tuesday evening, and it was half the price of rusted junk on ebay. For hotrodders interested in a great deal on bearing retainers bookmark this
http://www.natauto.com/standard-transmission-parts/gm-front-bearing-retainers/

a perfect fit

I had a local machinist who worked for an engine rebuilding shop for many years make the pilot adapter. Fit was flawless and he charged me 20$ and had it done in a day. Cant beat that.

adapter plate in its final state with the bearing retainer holes drilled and threaded.

The driveshaft was moved forward a small amount to set it the correct depth into the pilot bearing. To hold the new position i drilled a new groove in the driveshaft for the transmission coupler bolt. Total amount the driveshaft moved might have been .5 "

Motor mounts done. As an experiment I put all the body panels back on the car as well as AC componets and to my surprise the front end did not drop so much as a .25", even after moving the car around. I start merging the LT wiring harness to the cars existing harness tonight.

Quick question. . .did you consider shortening the TT to address your pilot engagement issue?

Yes I thought of it many times and I may end up doing it later as there are many benifits besides just lining up the shaft in the pilot. Simply relocating the position of the driveshaft inside the TT was simpler, and at the moment my main goal is getting it on the road to see how I like it.

I ended up moving the entire driveline back .75" today. I did it for several reasons;

1. The LT waterpump was nearly impossible to remove once in the car due to the hood latch housing.
2. The waterpump would also be in the way of cooling fans and radiator necessitating modification of the radiator area.
3. The Air intake J-boot was in the way of the hood latch.
4. The front of the intake manifild was in the way of the hood shutting completely. This is a common problem on LT 944 conversions usually solved by lowering the crossmember.
5. There was too much wasted space between the rear of the engine and the firewall.
6. Moving the engine and transmission rearward also contributes to bringing the car back into balance.

I setteled on .75" because it did not put the CV joints at too great of an angle, I can move the shift lever mounting plate forward without drilling and tapping the TT, and the clearance problems of the LT engine are solved. The hood shuts with .25" to spare and the waterpump clears the radiator and cooling fans. As the tubular motor mouts I made angle forward to support the motor, moving the motor back shortened them making them stronger.

I also removed the rest of the 944 engine management system and started integrating the GM wiring.

Keeping the guage connector, deleting all DME componets.

Engine bay looking better afterwards. Notice the frontal clearance difference .

Before

After

And the hood shuts!

Update. The car is now running. Headers mostly built, cooling system filled, engine has been started and allowed to run to warmup. I was really impressed that the whole setup fired right up. I left the harness I built unwrapped just in case there were problems.

I have been having issues with my flickr pictures showing on my computer, I dont know if it is just my system or if they are not visible others as well. Somebody please let me know if they are not showing.

Items to finish... headers need collectors attached, and exhaust needs to be run, alternator needs to be installed as well as powersteering, clutch line needs to be hooked up and bled.

Here are some pics of the headers I built. I bought a set of SBC long tubes of unknown application for 50 bucks and chopped them up completely building new from scratch. The finished product resembles many shorties found on the market today, but in making them from scratch I was able to tailor the bends and angles to match my application exactally.

Building drivers side.

Passengers as finished.

I am trying to keep as much of the cars original electrical system as intact as possible so I can keep factory guages and such.
Here is a water temp adapter.

Chevy unit on left, porsche unit on right with adapter.

Here is a clip I shot with my cell phone. The headers didnt even have collectors welded on yet so it was too loud for the speaker to handle. Poor quality filming but you get the idea.

Well I drove the car for the first time today. I could only go up and down the street once on my battery charge as the alternator is not hooked up yet. Too early for first impressions, but first gear seemed almost not needed and with no exhaust the car was deafening inside. I had been a little worried about how the clutch was going to operate but the GM slave cylinder worked quite well with the porsche master cylinder and the driveline functioned beautifully.

Some pictures of the camaro intake elbow that I modified to fit. There was not much room between the hoot latch and the manifold but it fit after some shaping. The rubber on these boots is very thick.
