Ian, I see that your steering quick release hub looks like a Spa Design, correct?
I have one, but am hesitant to weld that stub to the shaft. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I wish it was a spa design, its just a common one out of jegs. Welding it on took a bit of nerve and a really good welder. We used a series of shims inside the hub to brace it against the steering column so the it was perfectly level. Even with all that prep we still got it a little off. You'll never know unless you spin the wheel really fast and it has not had any I'll effects on track.
If yours is not going to be just a track car and want to sell it in the future as a road car I would go with a bolt on version. In order to get the strength needed you have to tig weld it and I am pretty sure you will have to get a new steering column if you want to undo it.
Cheers,

I have a spare shaft, so would use that as a replacement. Will have to think about it for now, thanks. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Alright folks, here are a few pics and a video snippet from our final shake-out day prior to my double drivers school down at the SCCA America's Road Race of Champions last weekend.
Road Atlanta is an epic and awesome track!! I have not driven a track with that much elevation change in some time...took a little getting used to. Turn one confused me pretty good...I think just staying in fourth and trusting the car would be the trick......I need a lot more seat time!!
Little things to work on that are already underway:
I guess the alternator only wants the rubber mount on the case as it keeps breaking the solid mounts I make for it....rubber mount back on.
My fuel pump died while I was putting it on the trailer, so I had to pull the dash and check everything out. I think it was just a dirty connection as I have it working again via the dash mounted switch.
My front crank seal was leaking pretty good so I have the crank pulley off and found that the little spring that holds the seal on to the rotating mass had popped of...probably when I was putting on a few years ago...just waiting on the new one to get here.
Overall she has done very well for a car that was headed down the road of being parted out and then crushed....who would have thunk that she would be able to drive in anger on a track where legends have dueled!!!!

I'm working so close to Road Atlanta I hear every event they have there. I heard that race going on last Saturday while I was glueing PVC conduit together. The weekend before that was the PCA event.

Awesome, and nice job Ian! Car looks very nice. Those photos bring back some great memories...
Let me know if you need any tips re: getting a Toofah 'round that track quick...
My wife was quite pissed that she couldn't run the ARRC this year, especially when she heard there were only two ITB cars!!
Maybe next year it'll be in the plan...
@nick: did you hear last Nov when we were playing with the helicopter?? I always wondered how we got away with that one without any spy photos... wondered just how quiet that chopper was... _________________ Vaughan Scott
