My original 924 engine completely cracked, so i decided to install a new one, so the question is what audi or vw engine will fit bellhousing? It's easier for me to find any working engine than search for a new crankshaft with all enclosed stuff.

The Audi 5-cylinder shares the same bolt pattern at the bell-housing.

The cross-flow 20-valve 5-cylinders seem to fit better as the 10-valve motors tend to fowl their intake manifolds on the strut tower.

A 10-valve bottom end with a 20-valve top end seems to be the hot ticket in the Audi world since it provides a little more power than the normal 20-valve non-turbo motor due to the extra compression ratio.

Of course the 20-valve turbo is a killer motor from back in the day of the Group B rally cars

A customized oil pan and exhaust manifold will be needed to clear the crossmember. Apparently there was a factory tubular header for the 20-valve NA that was available for a short time in Europe that is practically a drop in fit.

The mounts are pretty close apparently.

Engine management will need to be altered as well.

There is some speculation that other Audi motors share the same bell-housing pattern, but that hasn't been completely confirmed yet.
