Letter to the editor. . .should it mercilessly flog them and ask them to whom they spoke in arriving at their opinions (use of the phrase "questionable reliablity", assertion that maintanence costs are more than a 2.5. . .hello, FOES?), or should it thank them for beating down the prices so we can obtain more nice examples??

I love the closing line. . ."Run, don't walk, to a 944 instead."

Sure, if you want something uglier, slower, and more commonplace.

In my experience a 931 is much more expensive to maintain than a 924S.

Many of us have spent more than $10,000 on a 931, how many of us have done this for a 924S?

I'm with Paul here. Maintenance and rebuilding a 931 can cost a fortune, thousands of euros, dollars, pounds etc. And I don't mean high spec restoration, just ordinary things to make it driveable.

dont know about that....

i always compare my costs and performance against a late model 944 owned by a friend of mine.

-tax is lower for the 931
-insurance is lower for the 931
-gaskets are cheaper for the 931
-oil price is the same
-brake pads price is the same
-clutch is about the same...cant say for sure...but about the same
-exhaust gaskets...931 has 911 turbo parts...so..they are more expensive...we must admit that there are some parts that the 931 has that are more expensive due to the fact that the 911 turbo has them.


so in almost every single maintenance cost the 931 is the same or sometimes cheaper than the 944...and what i can say for myself...is that the 931 i have...blows the doors off any road going 944 NA..

i would run from the 2.5 NA honestly....big engine...low power...no potential of improvement.

I have always said this. Think of our cars the same you would think of a MGTD. they are not fast. Sure there are exceptions. We are all trying to get the best performance from an old car. In stock form it is not fast by any means. If you keep this in focus then you will be fine.
There are exceptions, but it will cost you in money and heartache. Enjoy the process of making it better.

A 931 in my mind is a mistress. Expensive, quick, and satisfying but not reliable in the long term and can get you into financial trouble quick.

A 924S in my mind is a better long term relationship, it is more dependable and easier to live with on a daily basis.

Bottom line, IMO, 931s are fun when they are running, but most spend more time being repaired than being driven.

Hm, i dont think its that expensive, and I have have worked with almost everything on these cars. Doesnt cost more than any other fast car from the same era. I dont really get all the talk on how expensive these cars are. And i started out with a abandoned scrappy car and have done alot to build the track oriented and clean stock looking car that i want.

May I ask:

Not including the original purchase cost, how much have you spent on your 931 since buying it?

How many miles a year do you drive it?

Would you take it on a 2000 km trip?

[931 euro]For me not much. Yes, I painted the car but I did it myself. Paint and other requirements total about 300.
I drove my 931 from NY to Florida for total of about 1000 miles. I would drive it anywhere.
The only reason not to drive it anywhere is "what happens if I breakdown". I don't want just anyone to work on it. Long Porsche rides ? I use the 911 Carrera.

Yes, I have put more money than I should have in the 924 Track car. But for the smiles while tracking it it was worth it.

I spent probably twice as much on the 924S I owned than on the 941 and GEBLASN combined (from a preventive maintenance perspective). And YES, I would drive any one of my cars on a 2000+ mile trip. The SH4RK, the 941, and SONIC06 have all three been on cross country trips. Even the UWB made it 600 miles from Covington IN with no breakdowns, and that was before I had a chance to do anything to it. The 924S, on the other hand, broke down weekly with one nagging detail or another until I spent well over $4000 to address everything, and it was acquired from a reputable PCA member who had meticulous service records.

Sorry, my experience doesn't reflect what has been posted above. Give me my 931 ANY DAY over any of the 2.5L cars.

And let me add to that, when the 941 did break down mid-trip from SLC to Detroit (water pump seized up), I was able to get it repaired in less than 3 hours and continue trip (thanks to my friends in Omaha). Try doing that on a 924S.

Head gasket just after I bought it: £40
Oil x 2: £30x2
Coolant x 1: £15
Wipers x 2: £10
Filters x2: £10
Still not fixed the hot start but I have an accumulator to swap in.

7500 miles pa - but I haven't had this one for a year yet. Just back from a 300 mile trip this weekend.

Yes, I'm off to France in a couple of weeks ~1200 mile round trip. (I do have breakdown cover though!!)
