'Cause this bloke reckons he'll consider a straight swap; your Boxster for his 914!

Here's a similar 914 in Tuscon, a bit of a drive of course, for a whole lot less.

And an even cheaper one in Phoenix, similar drive down!

I think the 914s are not as expensive as a Boxster.

I'd rather have a $13k 914 than a $13k Boxster. The maintanence costs on the latter would starve you out in short order.

Wasn't there a cronic problem with poor engine design in the early Boxsters? IIRC this problem was never fixed on those years of Boxters......engines were replaced by the factory until the warranty ran out.......then the owners were out of luck. I can see these particular years of the Boxster dropping to very low values. I can't recall if later engines could be used in these cars.

I think I'll go visit him... not to buy the car, rather to buy some of the pot he's been smoking. That's got to be some good shizzz.

It would be better if you could borrow a friend's nice late model Boxster when you go to look at the 914.

Early 986 suffered from "porous blocks," RMS seats being hammered out of round (replace engine) and intermediate shaft bearing failure (replace engine). I have read that PCNA is being somewhat prickly even about honoring warranty repairs (original owner only, all scheduled maintanence performed by the dealer, etc), and giving customers the finger outside the warranty period.

This is one reason I enjoy buying used cars......you can find out which year was the best year for that model and buy that year......not to mention the cheaper prices.

Where's Paul when we need him? He'll have the definitive Boxster/914 put up or shut up discourse!

I learned how to drive a stickshift car in a '71 Opel GT, and yellow, it was maybe a couple years old...

And a former boss had an '85 Supra, youza, nice car. And us oldsters would like to buy cars we dreamed about back in the day. However, dodge/plymouth Hemi cars were out of our parent's price range back then, and even more so today! So, finding a used car that is better than it's siblings might apply to say something built in the last 20 years, but not in the last 30 or so years! (Dat be us)

In 1973 my Dad's friend let me drive his Automatic Opel GT ina parking lot on sunday when there was no one around. So we have very similar experiences. My Opel needs a full restoration....but it has good bones. The engine leaked so much oil over the year that the underside was preserved by the oil.

I remember seeing the 2nd Gen Supra in 1982 in the showroom and I was captivated by it. In 1988 I bought mine 3 years old. It now has 46,000 miles on it and it is all mint and original....garage kept. It isn't worth much but I plan to keep it forever anyways.

I first saw a Triumph GT6 on a winding country road when one downshifted and blew past me when I was driving my Mazda RX3 (which was no slow car itself). I've always wanted a GT6 but life and responsibility dictated other things. Then 3 years ago I began searching for one. I wanted a Magenta one as they stand out the best at car shows. Magenta was pretty impossible to find as most people hated the color and the Magenta cars all depreciated quickly and ended up in the autowreckers pretty quick. But my GT6 was abandoned in a driveway in SoCal for 30 years. It's original and rust free but badly sun damaged.....so a full frame of restoration is required.

The 931 I've always admired as I did the 928. I've got the 928 so finding a 931 is next. This year I finish up the last of years of big projects related to my job.....and next year I'll have the freetime to begin my restoration projects.

I'm confident I'll find a suitable series 2 Guards Red 931 in the next couple of years. Once I get these 3 cars restored (931, GT6 and Opel GT).....I think I should be able to sit back and relax.......although I've always admired the '89 Porsche 930.....

Once cars are more than 20 years old....you're pretty well looking at a restoration if you want a nice tidy example.

Weird, my first car, albeit it was a short ownership time, was a 1976 RX4. Loved that car, it smelled new, low miles...and had a leaky, low compression rotary engine. DAng. Stealership wouldn't take it back, bastages. So, my old man called Mazda US, and got someone on the phone, many phone calls later, to replace the engine. I was still in diapers by the way. New engine, no cost to me, and he said, time to trade it in. Arghghghg, so, bought a '80 Plymouth duster, slant six, two door, low miles. Ran the crap out of it, nice car. Missed the Mazda.

I owned my 1973 RX3 in 1976-'77. Nice car......motor went and was replaced under warranty....cost me something like $77 for fluids and sparkplugs and airfilter. It got about 10mpg......but it was a FUN car.

I always admired the RX4...got a ride in one once. And I do like the new RX-8 butt he cost of fuel turns me off.......I might pick one up when they are old and cheap.

It's funny but you and I had many of the same sort of cars. I also owned a '72 Capri V6.....another neat car with a great exhaust note. They are another car that is long gone now.

I have fun finding old cars like these and taking them to car shows.......it brings smile to peoples faces when they see them.
