Realising now how much the 924 has become a part of my life, its like a drug, keeps me focused, busy and happy to know that i have one and i'm doing stuff to it to make it better, or just simply drive it around for fun. Does not work with other cars for some reason. |
I agree with "Does not work with other cars for some reason". Certain cars that you work on and drive you get to have a relationship and respect for...and they don't even need to be a "sports car" or something "special". My little '95 BMW 318i 4 door sedan is like that...it's just been a great little car! And of course I enjoy my "base" 944 as well...just a fun car to drive!
Others not so much, like the BMW X5 that I had for less than 6 months, very numb and no soul. Plus I was just waiting for the next electrical gremlin to pop up or other bloody "add-on" to go wrong!!! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

I have been DDing a 06 3.0 X5 since about fall 2017 alongside the M3 in the summer but the X5 alone in the winter.
It is what the GF wanted so I found a nice one for her with 103k miles and got a good deal on it straight cash craigslist style due to a transmission issue..
I was able to fix its transmission issue with the BMW INPA diagnostic software but that took a large amount of computer work to accomplish.
It does some crazy electronic things sometimes like this for example..
https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-e53-forum/109760-crazy-terrible-noise-under-my-intake-manifold-3-0-video.html
But it has not gone completely crazy yet electronically..
I have put window regulators in it, door handle cable, some suspension bushings and needs more, new MAF, beast AGM battery and sub/amp, 20" wheels now, sunroof problems..
I hate the electronic throttle and ofcourse the automatic transmission but it is a decent auto trans comparatively.
I think it is more fun to drive than a Chevy truck and I am thinking/hoping that the M54 3.0 I6 will be long term reliable.
I'm not saying I really like it, but she sure does, and it is a lot better than a minivan.
It does pretty good in the snow and on the highway, has a good ride and some feel of quality but deep down I know it is just a bomb waiting to explode.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Wait until you get to the oil leak issues...cam cover gasket and oil filter housing...and maybe throw in the oil pan gasket as well!!! With any luck the cam cover won't be warped and you can re-use it, LOL! As for your Chevy truck reference, I can totally appreciate where you're coming from but I would still take my old '84 big block 3/4 ton Suburban over the X5 that I had. The fuel mileage wasn't that much worse and it could haul a tank! I didn't think it was uncomfortable either and I spent many a mile towing with her.
I won't get into the '09 Mini Cooper S we had and it's issues...especially with recalls! And that sucker only had about 70K on the clock. I will say it was somewhat fun to drive but issues and crappy build quality took away from that one good point.
Morghen, and I believe most of us here, have it right and the older cars are just a better alternative if you want a car you can "bond" with! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Do you know what makes or breaks Turbo removal?
Whether or not the three main bolts have the small star head or standard hex.
Just removed the turbo out of the '82 with engine in car. Two guys in way less than an hour because the bolts were accessible with a socket. On a lift which helps but I have done it on jack stands as well
Just tried to remove a turbo from another 82 with engine OUT of the car. Terrible....
Previous owner had large hex bolts installed and the inner bolt underneath will not accept a socket. Bolt head is right up on the manifold. Everything has to come off including engine mount bracket to get a regular wrench on the bolt. So happy _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

Finished the 5lug M471 conversion, well sort of, as i did not fit the hand brake mechanism yet but its now rolling on 5lug wheels.
Trying to get it ready for the paintshop on Monday.
Car needs to be fully stripped on Monday.

Just pulled a hand brake cable and thats a job in itself. Can't wait to see your car in paint
Need to redo the scan but the billet block project has begun...I'll start a thread of its own once I have real content to post up. Plus I have been distracting myself by pulling an '82 931 of everything it has the past two weeks. Cleaning it all up and dropping into another '82

Just ordered a cage from these guys :
http://www.kirkracing.com/
They were recommended by a few different people for having some of the best built bolt-in cages out there. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

Billet block, you're nuts! Why not start with the cyl head instead, the block is the good part, though not the lightest. Are the scans you do for sale? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Make sure you have large enough plates under the legs of the cage. Do they go to the sills or the floor pan? Hopefully the former - much stronger.
When we built the #77, this was the reason for us choosing OG Racing for our bolt-in cage... sadly they don't seem to still supply cages (which they of course did have made for them)... _________________ Vaughan Scott

first...2000HP ...I wasn't exactly thinking in that direction. More along the lines of weight reduction coupled with a few other parallel things going on. One which I don't want to mention until its proven
I realize I can get blocks pretty much all day but the thought of boring a stock block to the max bothers me. If I make a billet block with Darton wet sleeves its rebuildable and I can max out the bores. Cooling should be better and its lighter. I guess I just want to try too
There is a cylinder head project in play as well but I need to develop the head first. I'd start with a stock head and then it may require a billet development head before I get to anything final. So I am thinking the head might (will!) take longer even though I might have a development head running rather quickly. You guys are going to want verification in the end too. Been around here too long
I have to think about the selling of the scans. _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

I believe Mittelmotor have done the 'race' 931 head already. No idea of price. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

There are many people who can port heads, joakims is for example at the extreme end with offsetting the whole head in relation to the block aswell. But regardless you will be limited by stuff being in the way for the ports and going to the limit of the castings. Incorporating more common valve train components could make life much easier aswell. Making the deck stiffer aswell would really help to seal when the cylinder pressures gets nasty
